Methyl tert-Butyl Ether (MTBE). Methyl tert-hutyi ether [1634-04-4] is made by the etherification of isobutylane with methanol, and there are six commercially proven technologies available. These technologies have been developed by Arco, IFF, CDTECH, Phillips, Snamprogetti, and Hbls (hcensed jointly with UOP). The catalyst in all cases is an acidic ion-exchange resin. The United States has been showing considerable interest in this product. Western Europe has been manufacturing it since 1973 (ANIC in Italy and Huls in Germany). Production of MTBE in Western Europe exceeded 600,000 tons in 1990.

In Germany, production plants for extracts, e.g. hop extract, are operated with subcritical separation (Figure 6). In these plants, heat recovery measures may significantly reduce the energy consumption. Energy calculations were performed for the example of a SCF extraction plant for processing 15 t hops/24 h with extraction at 300 bar and 60 C, separation at 60 bar and 40 C, a specific solvent mass flow of 10 kg CO2 / (h kg. hops) and an extraction time of 4 h. In Germany products become registered by BfR after testing of various polymer materials to detect residuals of the products. The US FDA describes only residual decomposition products that are not to be found. Future legislation is under preparation by the European Community in this area (Table 2).

Secret developments in Germany by BASF overcame many of the practical problems by 1889, but the information was not released until ten years later, when the engineering modifications of Rudolf TJ. In 2002, BASF sold its Luranyl business in Europe and Asia to Romira GmbH, a producer of engineering plastics in Pinneberg, Germany. Production of the blend of PPE and HIPS with a capacity of about 5,000 tpa is being transferred from sites in Germany and Korea to Pinneberg.
