German or Japanese authors name these dyes (3-ethyl-4,5-diphenylthiazole-2)(3-ethylrhodanine-5)-0-methine neutrocyanine and (3-methyl-4,5-diphenyl thiazole-2)(3-methyl-l-p-sulfophenyl-2-pyrazol-5-one-4)tetramethineneutrocyanine, respectively. [Pg.27]

Similarly, examples of barriers arising largely from simple steric hindrance can be found, as for instance in the hindered diphenyls.35 On the other hand there are many arguments suggesting that this is not the important force in ethane and similar molecules. It would be difficult to understand the relatively slow fall in barrier from ethane to methyl silane to methyl germane on a van der Waals repulsion basis. Furthermore, the small effect of substituting F, Cl, or Br on one end would also seem mysterious. The equilibrium orientation in propylene is opposite to the predictions of one of the quantitative van der Waals theories. Finally, the apparently small effect of bending back the C—H bonds is not in accord with either the electrostatic or van der Waals pictures. [Pg.391]

The concept of caseless ammunition is not a recent one as such ammunition, for use in breech-loading firearms, has been in circulation for well over 100 years. The concept was experimented with by different countries at various times, but with only limited success. Typical compositions consisted of nitrocellulose (12.6% nitrogen) 65%, kraft paper 15%, resin 20%, and diphenyl-amine (added) 1%. The German firm of Heckler Koch has relatively recently solved many of the problems associated with caseless ammunition and produced a rifle, the HKGH, to fire 4.73 x 33 mm caliber caseless ammunition. [Pg.93]

During the war much diphenyl chloroarsine was employed. However, in May, 1918, it was largely substituted by diphenyl cyanoarsine by the Germans because of the superior physio-pathological effects of the latter. Diphenyl cyanoarsine is considered as the most irritant substance employed during the war. [Pg.297]

Various photoreactions in which the silicon atom plays a less important role have been reported. The isolation of trans-1,2-diphenyl-4,4,5,5,6,6-hexamethyl-4,5,6-trisilacycloheptene (185), formed by irradiation of the corresponding cis-isomer (186), has been described the stability of this system is attributed to the long silicon-silicon bond lengths.Evidence for the intermediacy of a photochemically generated metastable trans-cycloalkene has also been reported in l,l,4,4-tetramethyl-l,4-disilacyclohept-2-ene. A novel [,2 + 2] photocycloaddition to give the bicycles (187) has been reported in the diallylsilanes (188) in the presence of 1,4,-dicyanonaphthalene. Intramolecular [ 2 + 2] photoaddition has also been observed in bis- and tetrakis-(4-vinyl-benzyl) silanes and their germane analogues, and the oxetanes (189) and (190) have been prepared by irradiation of 1,1-dimethyl-2,5-diphenylsilacyclopentadiene in the presence of benzophenone. [Pg.354]

It is of interest in connection with these arsenic compounds to mention one which was extensively used by the Germans in the Great War. It was known as blue cross or sneeze gas it has the formula (C6H5)2AsCl and is diphenyl-chloroarsine. It was prepared in large quantities through the use of Bart s reaction, which has been mentioned above. [Pg.546]
