Benzophenone. Benzophenone [119-61-9] (diphenyl ketone) exists in a stable form as colorless orthorhombic bisphenoidal prisms when crystallized from alcohol or ether. Other labile forms of lower melting point exist. Benzophenone has been identified as a flavor component of wine grapes and has a geranium-like odor. It is soluble in most organic solvents, and is insoluble in water.

This ketone, C Hg. CO. CgHg, is diphenyl ketone. It is a fragrant crystalline body melting at 48° and boiling at 307°. 

The thermolysis of 4-azidophenyl methyl ketone in morpholine at 170°C yields a mixture of the expected 5-acetyl-2-morpholino-3f/-azepine (33) and 6-acetyl-2-morpholino-3//-azepine (34), the product of a unique and totally unexpected thermal rearrangement of the 5-acetyl derivative.119 Similar results can be obtained in hot piperidine, whereas thermolysis of 4-azido-diphenyl ketone under similar conditions yields only the 6-benzoyl-2-(cycloalkylamino)-3//-azepines (7-18%) accompanied by much tar.

The molecular weights of poly(ketone)s obtained from diphenyl ketone and diphenyl sulfone are lower than those from diphenyl ether and diphenyl sulfide. The former monomers possess highly electron-withdrawing carbonyl or sulfone groups, which lower the electron density of the rings.
