Since the expression of a wide array of protective antioxidant genes are positively regulated by the ARE sequence, Nrf2 may serve as a regulator of ARE-driven cellular defense systems against oxidative stress induced by dietary isoflavones [Mann et al., 2007 Siow et al., 2007].

The a3 isoform is expressed mainly in adult neurons and neonatal cardiomyocytes. The a3 gene exhibits three positively regulating cis elements that bind NP-Y, Spl and Sp2 [10]. Its neuron specificity appears to be related to a neural-restrictive silencer element and a positively acting cis element [11]. 

The proposed model to explain OCS is schematized in Fig. 7.2. Several agents, induced or not for estrogen deficiency, stimulate the expression of RANKL on stromal/OB cells. The binding of RANKL with its receptor RANK on osteoclastic precursors, together with M-CSF, is a necessary and sufficient condition to carry out all the steps in the formation and differentiation of the osteoclasts. Undoubtedly all this is much more complex than what is described here since at least 24 genes that positively and negatively regulate OCS have been described (Boyle et al. 2003).
