Gasoline corrosion

Uses Intermediate for dyes and antioxidants inhibits gum formation in gasoline corrosion inhibiter organic synthesis (preparation of p-phenylenediamine). 

Sulfur poor odor, decreased tetraethyllead susceptibility in gasoline, corrosion. of processing equipment, deactivation of catalysts. 

At this point in time, the total sulfur content of crudes was not taken into consideration, since most of them were produced and refined in the United-States and contained less than 1%, and only the gasoline coming from corrosive crudes needed sweetening (elimination of thiols) for them to meet the specifications then in force. Today all crudes containing more than one per cent sulfur are said to be corrosive . 

Corrosion Inhibitors. The corrosion inhibitors used in diesel fuel ate generally similar to those used in gasoline and, like the latter, produce an effect primarily by surface action. If amine additives ate used for detergency, these may provide some corrosion protection as well. 

Detergent Additives. Diesel engine deposits ate most troublesome in the fuel dehvery system, ie, the fuel pump and both fuel side and combustion side of the injectors. Small clearances and high pressures mean that even small amounts of deposits have the potential to cause maldistribution and poor atomization in the combustion chamber. The same types of additives used in gasoline ate used in diesel fuel. Low molecular weight amines can also provide some corrosion inhibition as well as some color stabilization. Whereas detergents have been shown to be effective in certain tests, the benefit in widespread use is not fully agreed upon (77). 

In gasoline engines lead halides accumulate in the lubricant occasionally these give rise to the corrosion of aluminium-alloy pistons and very rarely to corrosion on aluminium-tin bearings. ... 

A recent application of this type of fluid is assistance in the removal of ingested salt spray from jet aircraft compressors and the neutralisation of corrosive effects. Other types of water-displacing fluids are claimed to have fingerprint neutralising properties or to be suitable for use on electrical equipment. Some oil-type materials serve temporarily as engine lubricants and contain suitable inhibitors to combat the corrosive products of combustion encountered in gasoline engines. 

One of the most common impurities in coastal areas which acts in a chemical manner rather than a physical one is salt water. However, with the ever-increasing spread of the chemical industries, and the stepped-up use of gasoline powered vehicles, the problem of chemical degradation are also of interest particularly in inland areas. While plastics in general are corrosion resistant, the multiplicity of chemical agents which can be in the air in industrial atmospheres, plus the chemical nature of the various plastics indicates that it cannot be assumed that all plastics are chemically resistant to all atmospheres. 

Today s underground tanks must last thirty or more years without undue maintenance. To meet these criteria they must be able to maintain their structural integrity and resist the corrosive effects of soil and gasoline, including gasoline that has been contaminated with moisture and soil.
