Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase levels

Hepatic effects Prescribe with care in patients with current evidence or history of abnormal liver function indicated by significant abnormalities in serum transaminase, bilirubin, and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase levels. 

Chronic exposure to dioxins has resulted in splenic and testicular atrophy, elevated gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase levels, elevated cholesterol levels, and abnormal neurologic findings. Additional effects include enzyme induction, diabetes, and endocrine changes. The chronic, noncancer reference exposure level of 3.5 xl0 pgm is listed for TCDD or 2,3,7,8-equivalents by the California Air Pollution Control Officers Association Air Toxics Hot Spots Program. 

Chronic exposure to low 1,1,1-trichloroethane levels (<250 ppm) did not affect serum chemistry parameters, including SCOT, serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), bilirubin, LDH, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, and alkaline phosphatase, in individuals tested as part of a matched pair epidemiology study (Kramer et al. 1978). Results from tests for hepatic function were unremarkable in 28 workers exposed to unspecified, but high, concentrations of 1,1,1-trichloroethane for approximately 10 years (Kelafant et al. 1994).

Patients with partial obstruction have elevated serum alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase. The serum of patients with clinically apparent jaundice shows increases in total and conjugated bilirubin. Alkaline phosphatase levels are increased to more than three times normal. Elevated alkaline phosphatase levels are accompanied by increases in gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase and 5 nucleotidase, usually disproportionate to serum transaminase levels. Serum aminotransferase levels usually are less than 300 lU/ml.
