Gamma correction

A color television set contains an array of electron-sensitive phosphors. Three different phosphors are used, one emits red light, another emits green light, and the remaining one 

If one applies a power proportional to the measured luminance to the electron guns, then the image will appear too dark. Suppose that we want to display three pixels, one with intensity 0, one with intensity 0.5, and one with intensity 1.0. Let us assume a black level of zero, i.e. k2 = 0, A = 1, and a gamma value of 2.2. If we now apply voltages of 0, 0.5, and 1.0 for the three pixels, then the result would be measured intensities of 0, 

In order to obtain output images that appear to be equivalent to the measured ones, one has to apply a so-called gamma correction. The relationship between the output voltage and the pixel intensity has to be linearized. Let c be the pixel intensity that is used to drive the electron gun. Then, we obtain

Tristimulus sRGB values that lie outside the range [0, 1] are clipped to the range [0, 1]. Gamma correction is performed linearly for values smaller than or equal to 0.0031308 and nonlinearly for values larger than 0.0031308 (Poynton 2003). 

This function closely fits the standard gamma function of gamma(x) =xZ3. The two sections (one linear and the other nonlinear) were introduced to allow for invertability using integer arithmetic. Finally the gamma-corrected RGB values are mapped to the range [0, 255].

Note that this algorithm is also able to cope with any gamma correction that may have been applied to the input pixels. If the pixels are gamma corrected, i.e. c = Iy for some gamma value y, we have... 

Again, the constant due to the illuminant can be removed by transforming the result to the range [0, 1]. This will also remove the constant due to the gamma correction. 

If a gamma correction has been applied, the result will be similar (Finlayson et al. 2002). In this case, the pixel colors will be given by... 

Thus, even if some unknown gamma correction has been applied, the two-dimensional vectors prg, m,.A I for a given reflectance viewed under black-body illumination will form a line in log-chromaticity difference space.

Because of the presets of gamma correction in the color workspace of the computer used to generate the gradient mask, the distribution of black and white pixels along the gradient shows a distinct nonlinearity. A detailed analysis of the pixel distribution on the mask is shown in Supporting Information 1. 

Terminology used to describe operations related to tone scale is somewhat inconsistent in the literature. We will treat tone mapping and gamma correction as two separate operations, although they are sometimes combined. Tone mapping is defined to be an intentional manipulation of the tone scale to deviate from accurate tonal rendition, for purposes of producing a more useful, informative, or... 

If the imagery is not displayed, hut rather is used for information extraction, as in machine vision applications such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), then gamma correction is not required. 

The color lookup table implements 3 look-up tables with 256 x 10 bit entries each. These can be used for different kinds of applications. For non-linear color transformations (called gamma correction), the color components R, G and B are processed independendy. The input code is used as a table index and the table entry as a 10-bit output color code. The alpha value inputs are by-passed (unchanged) through the color lookup table. The second application is to use the table as an indirect color palette (lookup index). To implement reduced memory bandwidth, the index is interpreted to a 10-bit color in the palette.
