Fused slurry

Protection of niobium and its alloys from oxidation in air is accomplished by coating, e.g. with zinc deposited by holding in zinc vapour at 865°C or coating with a layer of chemically stable oxide, nitride or silicide. Silicide coatings applied by pack cementation, fused slurry or by electrolytic methods have been found to be one of the most effective means of preventing oxidation of the metal. [Pg.854]

Metal powder—glass powder—binder mixtures are used to apply conductive (or resistive) coatings to ceramics or metals, especially for printed circuits and electronics parts on ceramic substrates, such as multichip modules. Multiple layers of aluminum nitride [24304-00-5] AIN, or aluminay ceramic are fused with copper sheet and other metals in powdered form. The mixtures are appHed as a paste, paint, or slurry, then fired to fuse the metal and glass to the surface while burning off the binder. Copper, palladium, gold, silver, and many alloys are commonly used. [Pg.138]

Dana2ol was prepared from 4.32 grams of 17a-ethynyl-2-hydroxymethylene-4-androsten-17(3-ol-3-one, 1.00 gram of hydroxylamine hydrochloride, 1.12 grams of fused sodium acetate and 135 ml of acetic acid. To a 500 ml, 3-necked flask, equipped with a sealed Hershberg-type stirrer, a reflux condenser and a stopper, was added the above androstenone derivative in 300 ml of 95% ethanol. The strange carbon blast was produced by binary star 4U 1820-30, which consists of a dwarf star orbiting a neutron star. Gas from the dwarf flows in a spiral pattern around the neutron star. When some of the dwarf s gas collides with the neutron star s surface, a compressed slurry of hydrogen and helium is formed. Pressures and temperatures can get sufficiently high in the slurry layer that the elements flash-fuse in a thermonuclear explosion. Each blast leaves carbon, one of the byproducts of helium fusion. Gradually a layer of carbon several hundred meters thick reaches a critical temperature and ignites a carbon bomb that rages for hours.
