Furniture adhesive glue

Tannin-containing woods also darken with ammonia, a process which is usefully employed in darkening oak furniture by fuming . Ammonia stains can originate from animal glue, amino-type adhesives and concrete additive sources, particularly where damp conditions exist. [Pg.963]

Finally, a large variety of hot-melt or thermoplastic adhesives have been developed in recent years. These are solid at normal temperatures, but melt and flow if heated and re solidity when cooled. A wide range of melting points and bond strengths are available, depending on the requirements of the application. These adhesives are widely used in furniture and cabinet construction and have largely replaced the hide/bone glues formedy used in these applications. [Pg.379]

Animal and starch glues, especially because of their low color and ease of application on complex joint surfaces, were the adhesives of choice in the furniture and cabinet industries from colonial days until the advent of synthetic emulsion adhesives after World War II. Service conditions were limited to dry interior applications, of course. Leaving a chair out in the rain meant dismantling and regluing. [Pg.8]

In contrast to their widespread use in furniture and paper products, animal glues have not proved useful as struetural adhesives for wood. When used as the principal protein constituent, their water sensitivity is excessive compared with other available proteins. When eombined with soybean, blood, or casein, animal gelatin glues are completely hydrolyzed and destroyed by the strong alkalies required to disperse these proteins. In addition, they soften when severely heated, which, by law, prohibits their use in structural wood products [5]. [Pg.473]

Although in recent years animal glues have been replaced substantially by the newer synthetic adhesives, particularly the vinyl and acrylic emulsions, large quantities are still sold in dry and stable liquid forms for furniture assembly or repair and paper bonding applications. [Pg.473]
