Selective functionalization

This discussion will be limited to functions of one variable that can be plotted in 2-space over the interval considered and that constitute the upper boundar y of a well-defined area. The functions selected for illustration are simple and well-behaved, they are smooth, single valued, and have no discontinuities. When discontinuities or singularities do occur (for example the cusp point of the Is hydrogen orbital at the nucleus), we shall integrate up to the singularity but not include it. [Pg.9]

The achiral triene chain of (a//-rrans-)-3-demethyl-famesic ester as well as its (6-cis-)-isoiner cyclize in the presence of acids to give the decalol derivative with four chirai centres whose relative configuration is well defined (P.A. Stadler, 1957 A. Escherunoser, 1959 W.S. Johnson, 1968, 1976). A monocyclic diene is formed as an intermediate (G. Stork, 1955). With more complicated 1,5-polyenes, such as squalene, oily mixtures of various cycliz-ation products are obtained. The 18,19-glycol of squalene 2,3-oxide, however, cyclized in modest yield with picric acid catalysis to give a complex tetracyclic natural product with nine chiral centres. The best studied of the endocarmabinoids are anandamide (A -arachidonyl-ethanolamine, AEA)(1) and 2-arachidonylglycerol (2-AG)(2). Anandamide was first identified from porcine brain extracts by Devane and co-workers in 1992 [13], while 2-AG was first reported in 1995 to have been isolated from canine gut [14] and rat brain [15]. More recently, noladin ether (2-arachidonyl-glyceryl ether, 2-AGE)(3) [16], virodhamine (D-arachidonyl-ethanolamine)(4) [17] and A-arachidonyl-dopamine (NADA)(5) [18] were proposed as endogenous ligands for the cannabinoid receptors. In a subsequent publication, the authors failed to detect noladin ether in mammalian brains and questioned the relevance of this compound as an endocarmabinoid [19]. The quinoxalinedione derivatives 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline (CNQX), 6,7-dinitro-quinoxaline-2,3-dione (DNQX), and 2,3-dioxo-6-nitro-l,2,3,4-tetrahydrobenzo[f]quinox-aline-7-sulphonamide (NBQX) are potent competitive antagonists of AMPA and kainate receptors.
