Fructose diet containing

Hereditary fructose intolerance is due to aldolase B deficiency and is often diagnosed when babies are switched from formula or mother s milk to a diet containing fructose-based sweetening, such as sucrose or honey. 

Patients completely recover after replacement of oral feedings by total parenteral nutrition. A diet containing fructose as the only carbohydrate is well tolerated (hereditary fructose intolerance must be excluded). 

In summary, semi-synthetic diets containing saturated fat are more cholesteremic, p-lipoproteinemic and atherogenic than "natural" diets. When different carbohydrates are used in semi-synthetic diets fructose and sucrose are more atherogenic than glucose. 

Baboons were fed semi-synthetic diets containing fructose, sucrose, starch or glucose (but no cholesterol) for one year. 

The metabolism of VLDL by lipoprotein lipase in the capillaries in many tissues results in the formation of low density lipoprotein (LDL), which is atherogenic, so that diets high in sucrose are a risk factor for development of atherosclerosis. Many children in developed countries now consume large quantities of soft drinks containing sucrose or fructose. According to the above discussion, this could lead to atherosclerosis in later life. 

About ten percent of the calories contained in the Western diet are supplied by fructose (approximately fifty g/day). The major source of fructose is the disaccharide sucrose, which, when cleaved in the intestine, releases equimolar amounts of fructose and glucose (see p. 86). Fructose is also found as a free monosaccharide in high-fructose corn syrup (55 percent fructose/45 percent glucose, which is used to sweeten most cola drinks), in many fruits, and in honey. Entry of fructose into cells is not insulin-dependent (unlike that of glucose into certain tissues, see p. 95), and, in contrast to glucose, fructose does not promote the secretion of insulin. 

Erbersdobler, et al. (6) found karyocytomegaly in the kidneys of rats fed 16200 to 23300 ppm fructose-lysine in the diet. The diet did not contain lysinoalanine (Fig. 2) but the renal damage was similar to that found after lysinoalanine administration by other authors. The details of this question are reviewed elsewhere (7). Erbersdobler s report has not been confirmed with new data by others. 

A child develops chronic diarrhea and liver inflammation in early infancy when the mother begins using formula that includes corn syrup. Evaluation of the child demonstrates sensitivity to fructose in the diet. Which of the following glycosides contains fructose and therefore should be avoided when feeding or treating this infant ... 

A healthy diet should contain both complex carbohydrates, such as starches and cellulose, and simple sugars, such as fructose and sucrose. However, the quantity of simple sugars, especially sucrose, should be minimized because large quantities of sucrose in the diet promote obesity and tooth decay.
