Infusions prepared from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia (bakuchi) can cause photosensitivity due to the presence of psoralens (10). 

The fact that some substances sensitize human skin to light has been known at least since the time of the Pharaohs. The Egyptians used plant extracts from Ammi Majus, which contains psoralens, and sunlight to treat skin disorders such as leukoderma (vitiligo). In one of India s sacred books, Atharva Veda (1400 b.c. or earlier), photochemotherapy of leukoderma with extracts of Psoralea corylifolia, which contains furocoumarins, is carefully described.

Bakuchiol is a phenolic monoterpene (meroterpenoid) isolated from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia L. (Fig. (6)) [107]. Topical application of 10 p.g of bakuchiol to fifth instar nymphs of D. koenigii, results in the metamorphosis to nymph-adult intermediates [108], This juvenoid activity is comparable to juvabione where application of 0.6 pg to fifth instars of P. apterus or 10 pg to last instar larvae of O. fasciatus, produced morphological abnormalities in 50% of the adults [91, 92]. The chemical data for bakuchiol is compiled in Appendix III, Table 11 and synthesis of the racemate methyl ether from geraniol has been reported [113]. 

Many natural products contain the coumarin structure [28]. Aesculetin 15 is extracted from horse chestnuts and psoralen 16 from the Indian plant Psoralea corylifolia. Furocoumarins such as 16 are photochemically active. On UV irradiation, they induce processes in the cell which lead to an increase in skin pigmentation and inhibition of cell division. This is due to the formation of cyclobutane with the pyrimidine bases of nucleic acids. Psoralens are used in the treatment of psoriasis.
