Frictional term

The first requirement is the definition of a low-dimensional space of reaction coordinates that still captures the essential dynamics of the processes we consider. Motions in the perpendicular null space should have irrelevant detail and equilibrate fast, preferably on a time scale that is separated from the time scale of the essential motions. Motions in the two spaces are separated much like is done in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. The average influence of the fast motions on the essential degrees of freedom must be taken into account this concerns (i) correlations with positions expressed in a potential of mean force, (ii) correlations with velocities expressed in frictional terms, and iit) an uncorrelated remainder that can be modeled by stochastic terms. Of course, this scheme is the general idea behind the well-known Langevin and Brownian dynamics. 

Thus one must rely on macroscopic theories and empirical adjustments for the determination of potentials of mean force. Such empirical adjustments use free energy data as solubilities, partition coefficients, virial coefficients, phase diagrams, etc., while the frictional terms are derived from diffusion coefficients and macroscopic theories for hydrodynamic interactions. In this whole field of enquiry progress is slow and much work (and thought ) will be needed in the future.

In considering the flow in a pipe, the differential form of the general energy balance equation 2.54 are used, and the friction term 8F will be written in terms of the energy dissipated per unit mass of fluid for flow through a length d/ of pipe. The possibility even exists of including dynamical effects with time-dependent friction terms (plus random forces at finite temperatures).77-80 Flowever, it may not be advisable to take advantage of this possibility, as the simulation would become increasingly slow with increasing number of time steps. Moreover, the simulation will slow down considerably in higher dimensions because of the nonorthogonality of the dynamical coupling in reciprocal space. 

In this particular case, the equations of motion for the X and Y directions are mutually independent and therefore can be integrated separately. Furthermore, because the frictional term is now a linear function of velocity, the sign will automatically adjust to take account of whether motion is downwards or upwards.

Electron-hole pairs have already been treated on the Hartree-Fock level in otherwise classical high-dimensional molecular dynamics simulation using the molecular dynamics with electronic friction method [120].
