Freezing rain

A snowflake is made up of ice crystals that are stuck together. Snowflakes form high in Earths atmosphere. Hail is a frozen mass of water that often forms inside thunderstorms. Sleet is made up of drops of rain that freeze as they fall to Earths surface. Freezing rain is precipitation that falls as liquid but freezes when it hits the cold ground. Together, these different forms of frozen precipitation move drops of liquid water out of the atmosphere and onto Earths surface where they can melt and seep into oceans and groundwater or freeze and build up to create glaciers and ice sheets. [Pg.9]

In order for rain to form, there must be particles in the air (i.c., dust or salt) around which the raindrop can form and which are at temperatures above freezing. When the particles are cooled to temperatures below the freezing point water condenses around them in layers. The concentrations of seawater and brackish water can vary significantly, and as such there is a difference between the concentrate produced from seawater desalination plants and brackish water desahnation plants. Seawater typically has a level of total dissolved solids (TDS) between 33,000-37,000 mg/L. However, one finds that, in cooling a liquid below its freezing point, the liquid may not always turn into solid phase at the freezing point. In fact, in some cases, such as water, even at around -40°C, liquid water does not turn into a solid phase. It stays in what is called a supercooled state. Overpressure in cryogenic systems can also occur in a more subtle way. Vent lines without appropriate rain traps can collect rainwater. Which when frozen can block the line. Exhaust tubes on relief valves and burst disks likewise can become inoperable. Small-necked, open-mouth dewars can collect moisture from the air and freeze closed. Entrapment of cold liquids or gases can occur by freezing water or other condensables in some portion of the cold system. If this occurs in an unanticipated location, the relief valve or burst disk may be isolated and afford no protection.
