Fraction remaining

The effect of varying the mean pore size and number of pores on the predicted strength distributions of grade H-451 graphite are shown in Fig. 25. In this instance, both the mean size (SJ and number (N) of pores per unit volume was varied in the "SIFTING" code. This was necessary because the density was held constant, i.e., the pore fraction remains unchanged, and therefore a decrease of the mean pore size must be accompanied by an increase in the number of pores per unit... [Pg.526]

Petroleum or mineral oil (kerosene, etc.) are less soluble in alcohol than most oils. They have a low specific gravity and refractive index, and are not saponified by alcoholic potash. The lower boiling fractions can usually be detected by their odour, and the higher boiling fractions remain in the residue on fractional distillation. They are unaffected by fuming nitric acid. [Pg.357]

Residuum. This is the undistilled fraction remaining at the end of distillation, which corresponds to an upper limit of 565°C ( 1050°F) at atmospheric pressure, or up to... [Pg.322]

A cell-wall polysaccharide fraction remaining after treatment with a "classical" pectinase is termed rhamnogalacturonan (RG) or modified hairy regions (MHR). It is characterized by a highly branched ihamnogalacturonan-polymer with some arabinan side chains. [Pg.486]

As noted above, whole-cell MALDI-TOF MS was intended for rapid taxonomic identification of bacteria. Neither the analysis of specific targeted bacterial proteins, nor the discovery of new proteins, was envisioned as a routine application for which whole cells would be used. An unknown or target protein might not have the abundance or proton affinity to facilitate its detection from such a complex mixture containing literally thousands of other proteins. Thus, for many applications, the analysis of proteins from chromatographically separated fractions remains a more productive approach. From a historical perspective, whole-cell MALDI is a logical extension of MALDI analysis of isolated cellular proteins. After all, purified proteins can be obtained from bacteria after different levels of purification. Differences in method often reflect how much purification is done prior to analysis. With whole-cell MALDI the answer is literally none. Some methods attempt to combine the benefits of the rapid whole cell approach with a minimal level of sample preparation, often based on the analysis of crude fractions rather... [Pg.127]

Data on the absorption of simple salts of the lanthanide elements injected intramuscularly into rats are summarized in Figure 10.4 The dependence of the fraction remaining at the injection site on the administered mass is apparent. When the amount injected was less than 0.01 jug, about 0.5 was absorbed in the first few days another 0.4 was absorbed with a half-time of about 25 days and the remaining 0.1 left the injection site with a half-time of 100 to 200 days. As the total mass injected was increased, the fraction absorbed in the first few days declined, and the amounts associated with the lower absorption rates increased. If 100 jug or more were injected, only 0.05 to 0.1 was absorbed during the first few days, and absorption was very slow thereafter. [Pg.40]

Because the vessel is pressurized with pure nitrogen, the number of moles of oxygen remains constant during pressurization, whereas the mole fraction decreases. During depressurization, the composition of the gas within the vessel remains constant, but the total number of moles is reduced. Thus the oxygen mole fraction remains unchanged. [Pg.295]

Acetaldehyde vapor was passed through a plug flow reactor at atmospheric pressure and 600 C. The fraction remaining, f - na/na0 was measured as a function of Vr/na0 measured in seconds. [Pg.237]

The proportion of the legume flours which gelled when heated in a closed container increased from about 60 to 80% as a result of pin milling (Table IV). Also, most of the protein and starch fractions from field pea gelled under these conditions but a portion of fababean fractions remained as a pourable slurry. The proteinate and refined starch gave very firm gels. [Pg.190]

In desorption studies, plots of the logarithm of the fraction remaining vs time tend to show a progressive decrease in slope, indicating increasing resistance to desorption. Hence, desorption in natural solid particles seems to be a continuum. [Pg.215]

In studies of trichloroethylene (TCE) vapor sorption to various porous particles at 100% relative humidity, it was reported that the slow fraction remaining after N2 gas desorption was highly concentration dependent and not well simulated by considering only equilibrium nonlinearity. [Pg.215]

A number of experimental and theoretical studies have focused on the causes of mass-independent fractionation effects, but as summarized by Thiemens (1999), the mechanism for mass-independent fractionations remains uncertain. The best studied reaction is the formation of ozone in the stratosphere. Mauersberger et al. (1999) demonstrated experimentally that it is not the symmetry of a molecule that determines the magnitude of enrichment, but it is the difference in the geometry of the molecule. Gao and Marcus (2001) presented an advanced model, which has led to a better understanding of nonmass-dependent isotope effects. [Pg.14]

PtSn-OM and PtSn-OM samples show a more complicated radial distribution function. At least two different scatterer atoms must be present to obtain such a result. Considering the way the catalysts are prepared, a Pt-C and a Pt-Pt shell were used to perform the fits. Before the reduction process, a solvent fraction remains adsorbed on the samples, so the appearance of C near the Pt atoms is natural. Results show that the coordination number for the Pt-Pt shell is smaller in both... [Pg.256]

Once in the column, volatile compounds vaporize and less-volatile liquids drop to the bottom of the column. Reflux begins and oil fractions condense and collect in various trays throughout the column. Heating within the column can influence the rate of reflux and holdup within the column. Steam is introduced into the column at the level of the lower trays and strips lighter compounds from the condensed fractions on these trays. As a result, the flash point of the fractions remaining on the lower trays increases. [Pg.6]

Seeded polymerization using a slight amount of monomer leads to the surface modification without changing particle size. The resulting particles are a kind of core-shell particles or, more exactly, core-skin particles (Fig. 12.2.4C). Seeded polymerization of sugar-units-containing styrene derivative on polystyrene seed particle was carried out to obtain latex particles covered with sugar units (17). A necessary condition for this is that the monomer is more hydrophilic than the seed polymer. If not, the monomer permeates into the seed particle and only a small fraction remains on the... [Pg.652]
