FOUR SHIFT

After the incident, special day foremen were appointed to supervise construction jobs and interface with the construction teams. The construction teams like this system because they deal with only one process foreman instead of four shift foremen. 

In any APC, the operators must be educated and brought into it before they can use it. The control must be properly designed, meaning the model must be configured and properly tuned. The operators should be involved early and all of them should be consulted since all four shifts may be running the unit differently. 

A 70,000 ton/year, 22,000,000 plant was started up in 2001. Since then, it has been operating at capacity for an average of 7200 h/year. It is staffed by 25 full-time production workers ( 32/h), two maintenance workers ( 35/h), and four shift supervisors ( 39/h). All labor rates include payroll and plant overhead. The process consumes 530 kilowatts of electricity ( 0.045/kWh), 50,000 gal/h of water ( 0.15/thousand gal), and 8.75 tons/h of feedstock ( 0.78/lb). Maintenance materials are estimated as equivalent to maintenance labor. Royalties amount to 4.20 per ton of product. The property taxes, insurance, and administrative charges total 5.2% of the total capital investment. Find the direct and indirect annual costs for the plant. 

The adipic acid process is a relatively complex process and essentially contains two plants phenol hydrogenation and KA oil oxidation. We should therefore assume at least four shift positions for each plant, say nine total. For a Northeast Asia basis, we expect that the salary cost per shift position will be lower than the typical 50,000 per year that we would assume for a U.S. Gulf Coast plant. As a first approximation this is estimated as 30,000/y. The remaining salary and overhead costs are fixed following the assumptions given in Section 6.2.4. 

Around the clock operation. Three shifts of operation per day, seven days a week, using four shifts of labor, with or without scheduled maintenance shutdowns. 

The normal stagger shift operation I have seen and used involves four shift crews who work 8 hr a shift beginning at 8AM (day), 4PM (afternoon), and midnight (night). 

A company has a seven-day-a-week operation with four shifts working each day, with the following demand for workers. 

An explosion occurred in a 1250 litre stainless vessel, used for the distillation of crude o-nitrobenzaldehyde (ONBALD). The main pilot plant laboratory was completely destroyed and four shift workers leaving the building caught the blast. One shift worker received flash bums to his face and another was caught under the falling brickwork, receiving multiple fractures of the lower arm. 

The Site Emergency Flan (Ref 6-S9) and the MRP 4.08, "Events, Conditions, and Concerns Determination," of WSRC Procedure Manual IB (Ref 6-54), satisfy the requirements contained in the DOE 5500 Series Orders. K-, L-, and P-Reactors have consolidated thw emergency response mto one organizatioti operating out of the K-Reactor Central Control Room. Normal shifi staffing consists of four shifts with a supervisor, a shift technical coordinator, shift clerk, and operators to perform building surveillances in the reactors. RC HP is staffed with an inspector stationed at each reactor (fC, L, and P) and a supervisor which covers the reactors collectively. A minimum of one qualified supervisor, qualified technical coordinator, or qualified operator shall be stationed within the K-Reactor CCR at all times. 

A typical three-month training program consists of three (3) three and one-half hour discussion periods on a single chapter of the IPD Fhysics Primer series (ten and one-half hours total). The meetings are held every Wednesday from 8 00 to 11 30 a.m., at the 105 KE Conference Room, with each of the four shift classes meeting monthly. 

It is preferable to provide a four-shift rota to help avoid extended working hours. Critical start-up operations may necessitate a doubling-up of personnel to provide 12-hour shift cover for a period.
