Fouling development

In the sea and in estuaries, fouling chiefly consists of microorganisms, algae, barnacles, shellfish, tube worms, etc. Fouling develops most rapidly on stationary and slow-moving vessels (speed < 4 knots). [Pg.707]

Celiac Disease. A disturbance of the lower gastroiatestiaal tract, celiac disease is a chronic disease characterized by loss of appetite and weight, depression and irritabiUty, and diarrhea frequendy followed by constipation (35). One of the more disturbiag features of ceHac disease is the large, frothy, foul-smelling stools. The disease may develop ia childhood or later ia life. Frequendy, the patients who develop the disease ia adulthood report having had some of the symptoms duting childhood. [Pg.353]

Two undesirable aspects of FCC naphtha quaUty are that it may contain unacceptably high amounts of foul smelling mercaptans, and that its thermal stabiUty may be too low. Mercaptans are usually found in the light FCC naphtha and may be removed or converted to sulfides and disulfides by a sweetening process such as Merox, developed by UOP. Thermal stabiUty is improved in sweetening processes through removal of cresyUc and naphthenic acids. It may be further improved by clay treating and by addition of oxidation inhibitors such as phenylene diamine. [Pg.184]

Some additional methods of classification are under development that center on the use of lignite for combustion in utihty boilers or electric power generation. Correlations based on the sodium concentration in the lignitic ash (10), or soluble A1 concentration (11) are used. For ultrafiltration appHcations, hollow-fine fibers have never been seriously considered because of their susceptibiUty to fouling. If the feed solution is extremely fouling, tubular or plate-and-frame systems ate still used. Pure carbon disulfide is a clear, colorless Hquid with a deHcate etherHke odor. A faint yellow color slowly develops upon exposure to sunlight. Low-grade commercial carbon disulfide may display some color and may have a strong, foul odor because of sulfurous impurities. Carbon disulfide is slightly miscible with water, but it is a good solvent for many organic compounds. Ash fusion characteristics are important in ash deposition in boilers. Ash deposition occurring on the furnace walls is termed slagging, whereas accumulation on the superheater and other tubes is termed fouling.
