Corrosion resistance composites

Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States shared ahke in the early development of stainless steels. In the United Kingdom in 1912, during the search for steel that would resist fouling in gun barrels, a corrosion-resistant composition containing 12.8% chromium and 0.24% carbon was reported. It was suggested that this composition be used for cutiery. In fact, the composition of AISI Type 420 steel (12—14% chromium, 0.15% carbon) is similar to that of the first corrosion-resistant steel.

Some new applications were showcased at the American Composites Manufacturers Association annual conference, Composites Polycon 2007, in Tampa, Florida. These included scaffolding for the construction industry and a new steel-free concrete deck (see Fig. 12.14). Creative Pultrusions Inc. has developed a tough, hght and more corrosion resistant composite sheet piling system (Fig. 12.15) named SuperLoc profiles. These profiles consist of polyester resin matrix with more than 100 fibreglass rovings in the core, plus two phes of continuous strand mat. SuperLoc so far has been utilized in more than 20 shorelines in the United States (Black, 2004). 

Hidemitsu Hojo et al. (Hidemitsu et al., 1998) reviewed the behavior, the forms and mechanisms of corrosion of resins and glass fiber reinforced plastics under several aqueous solutions. They concluded that the concept of the corrosion rate of metals could be applied even in plastics and fiber reinforced plastics for each corrosion form. The corrosion resistance of the composites is mainly dependant on the resin s corrosion resistance properties and the corrosion crack propagation. Applications requiring corrosion resistant composite materials usually use epoxy and polyester resin as the composite matrix because these thermosets have high resistance to chemical attack. The composites industry has usually been perceived as providing specialty parts at premium prices. Today, however, composites are being reclassified from specialty to commodity industry. The growth of composite product development has resulted in lower prices without loss of properties, such as light weight, high stiffness, and corrosion resistance. Composites are now often cheaper than traditional materials—especially when installation costs, maintenance costs, and life cycle are factored in—and may become the economic barometer of the country, similar to steel in an earlier era. 

Surfacing mat, or veil, is used in conjunction with reinforcing mats and fabrics to provide good surface finish. It is effective in blocking out the fiber pattern of the underlying mat or fabric. Surfacing mats are also used as the inside layers of corrosion resistant composites, providing a smooth, resin-rich surface. 

Electrically conductive BMC with a proprietary conductive fiUer is developed for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel ceU conductive plates for passenger cars. Bulk Molding Compounds Inc. vinyl ester compounds are molded into PEM fuel cell plates.
