Foster studies

In order to determine the branching structure factor e, Foster ( ) studied a large qroup of high pressure low density polyethylene resins (HP-LDPE). Using the MWBD method, he calculated the whole polymer number average number of branch points per JOOO carbon atoms from SEC data as a function of e. Then the Xfj values were compared with those obtained by nMR.

The discovery of the polyoxin group (1) of antifungal nucleoside antibiotics (2) spurred the attention of synthetic chemists as well as biologists for a number of reasons. There are also cross-fostering studies of children of schizophrenic parents, adopted away by nonschizophrenic foster parents, who were compared with adopted children of normal parents raised by schizophrenic foster parents ( 53, 54). Invariably, those children whose biological parents had schizophrenia developed this disorder more frequently than the offspring of nonschizophrenic parents, even when the latter were reared by schizophrenic foster families. In addition, the concordance rate for the illness in schizophrenic monozygotic twins reared apart was comparable with monozygotic twins reared together. These findings leave little doubt of a hereditary factor in schizophrenia.

Stille and Foster studied the ozonization of acenaphthylene (1) to naphthalene-1,8-dialdehyde hydrate (2) and found that with ozone in a stream of nitrogen a yield of 73.5% can be realized, whereas with the usual oxygen-ozone mixture the yield was only 16.5%.

For H-2 and mating preference, we cannot now discriminate between these hypotheses. Ongoing cross-fostering studies will establish whether the bias favoring outbreeding can be disrupted by altered post-natal environments preliminary evidence suggests that it can. Foster s neglect of the role of the adsorbed film was unavoidable in the then absence of any reliable information as to the thickness of the film. It is now known that in fact the effect of the film on the calculated result is far from negligible, as will be demonstrated shortly. Since, however, all the methods of calculating pore size distributions involve a decision as to the upper limit of the range to be studied, this question needs to be discussed first. In effect one has to choose a point corresponding to point G in Fig. 3.1, where the mesopores are deemed to be full up. If the isotherm takes the course GH there are no further cores to be considered in any case but if it swings upwards as at GH, the isotherm is usually so steep that the Kelvin-type approach becomes too inaccurate (cf. p. 114) to be useful.
