Around the IBM 704 grew a scientific complier, FORTRAN (formula translator), developed by Backus61 in the mid-1950s over the decades it evolved into FORTRAN IV, FORTRAN 77, FORTRAN 90, and so on, and is the preeminent (if often inconvenient) source language for scientific computation. [Pg.556]
