Study of the mechanism of this complex reduction-Hquefaction suggests that part of the mechanism involves formate production from carbonate, dehydration of the vicinal hydroxyl groups in the ceUulosic feed to carbonyl compounds via enols, reduction of the carbonyl group to an alcohol by formate and water, and regeneration of formate (46). In view of the complex nature of the reactants and products, it is likely that a complete understanding of all of the chemical reactions that occur will not be developed. However, the Hquefaction mechanism probably involves catalytic hydrogenation because carbon monoxide would be expected to form at least some hydrogen by the water-gas shift reaction. [Pg.26]

The role of a hydroxylation step is consistent with the effects of iron chelators and anti-oxidants such as propylgallate seen intact cells. Sand production from loosely consolidated formations may lead to erosion of tubulars and valves and sand-fill in of both the sump of the A/ell and surface separators. In addition, sand may bridge off in the tubing, severely restricting flow. The presence of sand production may be monitored by in-line detectors. By-products from EDC pyrolysis typically include acetjiene, ethylene, methyl chloride, ethyl chloride, 1,3-butadiene, vinylacetylene, benzene, chloroprene, vinyUdene chloride, 1,1-dichloroethane, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, 1,1,1-trichloroethane [71-55-6] and other chlorinated hydrocarbons (78). Most of these impurities remain with the unconverted EDC, and are subsequendy removed in EDC purification as light and heavy ends. The lightest compounds, ethylene and acetylene, are taken off with the HCl and end up in the oxychlorination reactor feed. The acetylene can be selectively hydrogenated to ethylene. The compounds that have boiling points near that of vinyl chloride, ie, methyl chloride and 1,3-butadiene, will codistiU with the vinyl chloride product. Chlorine or carbon tetrachloride addition to the pyrolysis reactor feed has been used to suppress methyl chloride formation, whereas 1,3-butadiene, which interferes with PVC polymerization, can be removed by treatment with chlorine or HCl, or by selective hydrogenation. [Pg.419]

The solvent is then evaporated to yield vitamin D resin. The resin is formulated without further purification for use in animal feeds. Vitamin D can be crystallized to give the USP product from a mixture of hydrocarbon solvent and ahphatic nitrile, eg, benzene and acetonitrile, or from methyl formate (100,101). A number of reductive procedures have found general applicability. a-Azidoketones may be reduced catalytically to the dihydropyrazines (80OPP265) and a direct conversion of a-azidoketones to pyrazines by treatment with triphenylphosphine in benzene (Scheme 55) has been reported to proceed in moderate to good yields (69LA(727)23l). Similarly, a-nitroketones may be reduced to the a-aminoketones which dimerize spontaneously (69USP3453279). The products from this reaction are pyrazines and piperazines and an intermolecular redox reaction between the initially formed dihydropyrazines may explain their formation. Normally, if the reaction is carried out in aqueous acetic acid the pyrazine predominates, but in less polar solvents over-reduction results in extensive piperazine formation. [Pg.185]
