The Frankfort LPA instrument (51-53) departs from both of these instruments in two principal ways it achieves the necessary path length within a 6-m folded-path cell, and it rapidly scans a narrow-band frequency-doubled dye laser across the spectral region of interest (the Qi(2) line group) in a process sometimes called differential optical absorption spectrometry (DOAS). The scanning rate is sufficient to ensure that the observed air volume is chemically and physically stationary during each scan (the baseline standard deviation is less than 2 x 10-4 for a 0.2-ms scan). The laser output is actively feedback-stabilized to provide a flat spectral baseline, and a detection limit better than 10"5 in optical density has been claimed. While the uses are primarily in the food industry, the rancidity was often caused by microorganisms. One case involved off-flavor materials being produced in drying and curing ovens. Detection of neuropeptides in CE is usually performed by ultraviolet (UV) absorbance, fluorescence and mass spectrometry (MS). UV absorbance is widely used for detection in CE, often at 214 nm, because it is inexpensive, robust, and widely available on commercial instruments. Typically, concentration sensitivities lie in the micromoles per liter range, as shown in an application starting from 2.5-mL lumbar cerebrospinal fluid, where detection limits of neuroproteins with UV absorbance detection at 214 nm between 5 and 10 jUg/mL, corresponding to 0.1-1 mol/L, were reported [4]. In order to address the lack of sensitivity achieved with UV absorbance detection, path lengths in the detection window have been increased threefold by means of the bubble cell and 10-fold by applying the so-called z-cell. [Pg.1038]
