Flush toilets

Dual flush toilets were used and waterless urinals (falconwaterfree.com). Two urinal types were used. One with a cartridge lasting several weeks. The other requires the liquid to be added periodically by staff. The specific gravity is chosen so that urine sinks beneath. 

The sewer network we know today is a relatively new infrastructure in the cities. Not until the middle of the 19th century did it become common to construct underground wastewater collection systems in European cities. London and Paris were among the first, but other cities followed rapidly. The first sewers developed from the storm drains, which now were allowed to receive waterborne wastes from flush toilets, converting the drains into combined sewers. A major reason for collecting the wastewater was the enormous problem of unpleasant smell from the open sewers, cesspools and privies and the requirements for space in the streets in the densely populated cities.

The anthropogenic input of nutrients probably accelerated greatly with the development of urban water systems, indoor plumbing, and the "water closet". The Maine Bureau of Health (MBH) and the CDC developed a community needs survey to assess the continuing needs of and potential health hazards to residents of the state who remained without power. On January 17, residents from 111 households were interviewed. Electrical power had been restored to 75 (68%) of these households, 20 (18%) were using gasoline-powered generators to supply electricity, and 16 (14%) had no source of electricity. In all households, drinking water was available from municipal service, private wells, or water distribution points. All but one of the 111 households had water to flush toilets and access to transportation. Telephone service remained unrestored in 14 (13%) homes. Residents were listening to a radio or television in 103 (93%) households and, therefore, had access to public service broadcasts.

Flush toilets are easily one of the most significant advances of civilization. Not only do they remove an unsightly and potentially dangerous breeding ground for bacteria, they do so in such a civilized manner waste is removed quickly and efficiently, and the odors that would be associated with the stored waste are cleverly kept from us by a wall of water. In 1970, a 30,000 gpd plant (15,000 gallons in a 12-hour period) was supplied to the city of Colorado Springs for treatment of sanitary waste originating at the tourist station located on the top of Pikes Peak. The rapid start up (3 to 4 hours) is ideal for the short tourist season on the mountain. The compactness of the unit (81 x8 x 20 ) is an asset since space is a premium. The reclaimed water is not used for drinking, only for washing and flushing toilets, but analysis shows the effluent is of better quality than the Colorado Springs tap water. 

The acceptable level of pollutants depends on the use intended. We need not flush toilets or water lawns with water pure enough to drink. River water commonly contains traces of animal wastes that are acceptable for irrigation but must be removed before human consumption. Ocean water too salty for consumption can be used for industrial cooling and may be purified by distillation or reverse osmosis to render it suitable for drinking.
