Another important class of dryer is the fluidized-bed dryers. Some designs combine spray and fluidized-bed dryers. Choice between dryers is usually based on practicalities such as the materials handling characteristics, product decomposition, product physical form (e.g., if a porous granular material is required), etc. Also, dryer efficiency can be used to compare the performance of different dryer designs. Where there are large volumes of contaminated water under a small site, it is sometimes most convenient to treat the contaminant in a biological reactor at the surface. Considerable research has gone into reactor optimization for different situations and a variety of stirred reactors, fluidized-bed reactors, and trickling filters have been developed. Recent advances in Eischer-Tropsch technology at Sasol include the demonstration of the slurry-bed Eischer-Tropsch process and the new generation Sasol Advanced Synthol (SAS) Reactor, which is a classical fluidized-bed reactor design. The slurry-bed reactor is considered a superior alternative to the Arge tubular fixed-bed reactor. Commercial implementation of a slurry-bed design requires development of efficient catalyst separation techniques. Sasol has developed proprietary technology that provides satisfactory separation of wax and soHd catalyst, and a commercial-scale reactor is being commissioned in the first half of 1993. [Pg.164]

Another hydrogenation process utilizes internally generated hydrogen for hydroconversion in a single-stage, noncatalytic, fluidized-bed reactor (41). Biomass is converted in the reactor, which is operated at about 2.1 kPa, 800°C, and residence times of a few minutes with steam-oxygen injection. About 95% carbon conversion is anticipated to produce a medium heat value (MHV) gas which is subjected to the shift reaction, scmbbing, and methanation to form SNG. The cold gas thermal efficiencies are estimated to be about 60%. [Pg.25]

Miscellaneous Kilns. A U.S. kiln, the Fluo-Sohds, appears to be another vertical kiln type, but this is its only similarity. It operates on a different principle. It utilizes as kiln feed only a discrete granulation of 0.225—2.4 mm (65—8 mesh) sizes. DeHcately controlled by air and exhaust gas pressure, the kiln feed of granules is fluidized as a dense suspension. Because it is instmmented, this kiln can produce a very reactive lime at better than average thermal efficiency. The kiln, however, has limited utifity because the cost of obtaining the kiln feed with many hard, compact limestones is prohibitive. [Pg.173]

The common types of dryers are rotary, hearth, flash (spray), and fluidized beds (10). Hot gases are used invariably to remove moisture. The gas flow can be either cocurrent or countercurrent to the flow of soHds, the former tends to be more efficient. In the hearths, the gas flow is countercurrent as the soHds are raked down from one hearth to the next below. Flash dryers are very rapid because the soHds are exposed only briefly to the hot gases. Fluidized-bed dryers, which use hot gases to suspend the soHds, are rapid and efficient, but require elaborate dust coHection systems. These are preferred when fine soHds are involved, and are used commonly for drying fine coal. Indirect-fired dryers are used when the soHds are heat sensitive or combustible. [Pg.415]

Heterogeneous hydrogenation catalysts can be used in either a supported or an unsupported form. The most common supports are based on alurnina, carbon, and siUca. Supports are usually used with the more expensive metals and serve several purposes. Most importandy, they increase the efficiency of the catalyst based on the weight of metal used and they aid in the recovery of the catalyst, both of which help to keep costs low. When supported catalysts are employed, they can be used as a fixed bed or as a slurry (Uquid phase) or a fluidized bed (vapor phase). In a fixed-bed process, the amine or amine solution flows over the immobile catalyst. This eliminates the need for an elaborate catalyst recovery system and minimizes catalyst loss. When a slurry or fluidized bed is used, the catalyst must be separated from the amine by gravity (settling), filtration, or other means. [Pg.259]
