Flooded cell

The battery separator currently used by most flooded cell type lead-acid battery manufacturers are of the microporous PE type. It was invented in the late 1960s by W. R. Grace Co. The term... [Pg.209]

Preparation, particle size, and moisture will influece how fast liquid flows through the bed. Preparation should be controlled so that the flow is not too fast. Worse than that, however, is too slow a flow. The cell will then flood, and the liquid will overflow into the next cell. This could stop extraction in the flooded cell. [Pg.2577]

FM2. Water loss is reduced to the extent that periodic replenishment, as required by flooded cells, is no longer necessary. Nevertheless, both hydrogen evolution at the negative electrode and grid corrosion at the positive electrode do cause some water loss. [Pg.10]

The CSM design brings benefits to the performance of VRLA cells and flooded cells. OCSV cells have already been used successfully in a large, 500-kWh battery in a stationary application [72]. The use of such cells in batteries with even higher energy, up to some MWh, is the next step in the application of the technology. [Pg.458]

The battery separators currently used by most flooded-cell-type lead acid battery manufacturers are of the microporous PE type. It was invented in the late 1 %0s by W. R. Grace Co. [193]. The term polyethylene separators is somewhat misleading, since such a separator consists mainly of agglomerates of precipitated sUica, being held within a network of extremely long-chain UHMWPE [194]. A typical PE... [Pg.180]

A wet cell battery has a liquid electrolyte. It is also called as flooded cell, since the liquid covers all internal parts. Wet cells were a precursor to dry cells and are commonly used as a tool for electrochemistry. A particular type of wet cell known as a concentration cell is important in imderstanding corrosion. Wet cells may be primary or secondary cells. Some other primary wet cells are the Leclanche cell. Grove cell, Bunsen cell, chromic acid cell, etc. Wet cells are used in automobile batteries and telecommunication. [Pg.211]

Inhomogeneity in j is t3rpically caused by uneven distribution of reactants. In Section 4.2.1, it was shown that in a non-flooded cell, both oxygen concentration Cqx and j decrease exponentially along z. [Pg.156]

Figure 17.12 indicates this situation at 350 Ah for traction cells. In all cases the electrolyte had a gravity of 1.23 g/cm. It is obvious that in the flooded cell even after... [Pg.418]

Vented sintered-plate nickel-cadmium cells, in the discharged state, consist of flat positive nickel hydroxide and negative cadmium hydroxide plates, separated by materials that act as a gas barrier and electrical separator. The electrolyte, normally a 31% potassium hydroxide solution completely covers the plates and separators for this reason vented cells are referred to as flooded cells. ... [Pg.776]

Vented cell A heavy-duty cell design in which the vent operates at low pressure during the norm.al duty cycle to expel gases generated in overcharge. A vented cell plate pack contains flat plates separated by a gas barrier and separator, completely immersed in electrolyte. Often called a flooded cell. [Pg.736]

System Humidification A natural question for a student to ask is Why do we need to humidify the PEFC at all After all, it is a net water generation device, and yet so much of the design is ultimately meant to remove water from the cell. Since the fuel cell has a precarious balance between a moist electrolyte needed for high ionic conductivity and a flooded cell that degrades performance, it is entirely possible that some sections of the same fuel cell or individual plates in a stack will be overly dry and other sections in the cell or different plates in a stack will be flooded. Because of this, some humidification is typically needed at the inlet of the fuel cell to ensure adequate performance. Addition-aly, strong humidity gradients in the electrolyte can result in internal stresses that limit durability. [Pg.296]
