Lead oxide is a glass modifier that yields a very special type of glass known by a variety of names, including lead glass, flint glass, lead crystal, and... [Pg.144]

Lead may leach from lead crystal decanters and glasses into the liquids they contain. Port wine that contained an initial concentration of 89 pg/L lead was stored for 4 months in crystal decanters containing up to 32% lead oxide. At the end of 4 months lead concentrations in the port were 5,331, 3,061, and 2,162 pg/L in decanters containing 32%, 32%, and 24% lead oxide, respectively. Lead was also found to elute from lead crystal wine glasses within minutes. Mean lead concentrations in wine contained in 12 glasses rose from 33 pg/L initially to 68, 81, 92, and 99 pg/L after 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours, respectively (Graziano and Blum 1991). [Pg.417]

Babbitt metal is another alloy of lead that is used in the manufacture of wheel bearings that reduces friction. Lead is an ingredient in several types of glass, such as lead crystal and flint glass. [Pg.205]

Many imported and antique ceramics contain some lead. Have them tested, too. And avoid drinking from (or storing food in) leaded crystal. [Pg.38]

Pb304, and it is used in making flint glass (lead crystal) and as a red pigment. It results from the heating of litharge (PbO) in air at 400 °C ... [Pg.255]

Lead acetate solution white precipitate of lead sulphate, PbS04, soluble in hot concentrated sulphuric acid, in solutions of ammonium acetate and of ammonium tartrate (see under Lead, Section III.4, reaction 5), and in sodium hydroxide solution. In the last case sodium tetrahydroxoplumbate(II) is formed, and on acidification with hydrochloric acid, the lead crystallizes out as the chloride. If any of the aqueous solutions of the precipitate are acidified with acetic acid and potassium chromate solution added, yellow lead chromate is precipitated (see under Lead, Section III.4, reaction 6). [Pg.348]
