Flight of Missiles

The fragmentation of vessels which are under pressure leads to the flight of missiles. These can do harm to humans or damage neighbouring structures. The latter may lead to the so-called Domino effect, i.e. an escalation of accident consequences resulting from the destruction of nearby plants or parts of plants. In what follows the ejection and flight of fragments from vessels is treated on the basis of [70, 71]. [Pg.561]

The energy of explosion on vessel rupture depends on its internal pressure. That is determined by the boundary conditions of the accident, as described above. The higher the internal pressure the stronger is the explosion. [Pg.561]

The device known as DOVAP (Ddppler Velocity and Position), used for determination of flight of a missile, is described in Ref 3- This instrumentation system is so organized that several receiving stations feed data simultaneously from outlying locations to a centrally located recorder station. A remote control system permits an operator at the central recording station to check out and operate all receiver stations associated with the recording station... [Pg.428]

To illustrate the present state of chemistry modeling obtainable with the DSMC technique, we consider a particular system in detail. This concerns neutral air chemistry for which a typical kinetics model is shown in Table 1. This neutral species mechanism is appropriate for reentry of the Space Shuttle and for flights of high altitude ballistic missiles. [Pg.100]

Use The technique has a number of practical applications in airplane flight control, missile guidance systems other uses will undoubtedly develop. [Pg.655]

Ballistics—Applying to the motion and behavior characteristics of missiles. Interior ballistics—within the bore of the weapon exterior ballistics—in flight. [Pg.394]

These sequences are in general represented by event trees, also called accident sequence diagrams. Several examples of event trees are shown in Figs. 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 and 10.5. Releases of materials under pressure can additionally be accompanied by missile flight of fragments of the pressure boundary (e.g. vessels or pipework). If a gas is not flammable but toxic atmospheric dispersion follows its release. This is also true in cases of delayed ignition. [Pg.442]

Ballistic Missile Missile that is powered only during the first part of its flight includes missiles powered and steered during the end of their flight. [Pg.72]

This is not the first instance of its kind. A similar incident took place on 31 August 1998 in the same vicinity in which the North Korean missiles were fired in July 2006. An object propelled by rockets was launched by North Korea and a part of the object hit the sea in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Sanriku in north-eastern Japan. The impact area of the object was in the vicinity of the international airway A590 which is known as composing NOP AC Composite Route System, a trunk route connecting Asia and North America where some 180 flights of various countries fly every day. [Pg.65]

Computers have been defined as systems of machines that process information in the form of letters, numbers, and other symbols, and that are self directing within predetermined limits . Webster s New International Dictionary defines a computer as a mechanical or electronic apparatus capable of carrying out repetitious and highly complex mathematical operations at high speeds . Computers are used in business for the maintenance of inventories, the calculation and preparation of payrolls, etc. in industry for the automatic operation of machinery, the control of refinery operations, etc. and in research for the determination of flight characteristics of missiles and spacecraft, the prediction of the behaviour of substances acted upon by a number of variables, etc. These definitions were cited by the Canadian Supreme Court in R. v. McLaughlin [1980] 2 SCR 331 at 339. [Pg.166]
