Although abundant evidence supports the existence of snch an antoimmnne phenomenon, the causative event that heralds this self-directed immune-mediated attack remains uncertain. A number of mechanisms have been proposed to afford a molecular-level explanation of autoimmunity. One such explanation is molecular mimicry. Molecular mimicry occurs when a protein associated with a foreign substance bears structural similarities to a protein found in the host. For example, if a person experiences an infection from bacteria, there is a possibility that a protein in the bacterium shares certain similar geometrical and conformational features with a protein already existing in the person. Thus, an immune response directed against the bacteria will cross-react with organs in the host organism. 

It is possible that something could be lost from a developmental point of view if the experiential learning process is not entirely self-directed. But this is more a matter of how the project is handled than to do with whether or not you are the originator of the idea. 

Due to the relative ease of carrying out the reaction and the versatility of the process, the hydrosilylation reaction has been used in a number of interesting extensions and applications. Here several of them are highlighted. In one report, Lop-inski and coworkers used the same concept of the radical-initiated hydrosilylation reaction on the Si(100)-2 x 1 surface to induce self-directed growth of molecular wires on the surface [141]. Pioneers in the field recognized and wrote about the lobotomy-like effects of the neuroleptic drugs when they first came into use, but in recent years drug advocates have promoted the false impression that these medications have a specific antipsychotic or antischizophrenic effect. In reality, the overriding clinical effect of these highly toxic chemical agents is to render patients and inmates more emotionally flat and indifferent, more apathetic and docile, and less autonomous and self-directed. 

In a context in which the appropriation of labor by the state transformed work into something official and public, dacha activities represented an opportunity for ordinary citizens to redirect and reappropriate their own labor to suit their own interests and needs. This orientation resembles the self-directed appreciation of work captured in Stebbins s notions of serious leisure and occupational devotion (2004), although, as we will see, dachniki such as my informants associate this reclamation of one s activities, time, and body from the state as a form of soulfulness. Activities done for oneself are described as for the soul in recognition of the simultaneously physical and psychical satisfaction that comes from working for oneself and under conditions of one s own choosing. 

These findings led to fhe development of Douglas McGregor s Theory X and Theory Y management. Theory X, a basic assumption of bureaucratic organizations, assumes that people inherently dislike work, must be coerced and threatened to do the job, avoid responsibility, and have few career ambitions. Theory Y, in contrast, looks at workers as individuals willing to work and accept responsibility and as capable of self-direction and control. It also considers that the expenditure of menfal and physical energy at work is the same as at play.
