Flat heads

Stoppers. Those fitted with 514,519, and 524 cones are useful sizes. Stoppers with flat heads are to be preferred, since they may be stood on end when not in pse, thus avoiding contamination of the ground surface. An additional refinement is the provision of a finger grip as in Fig. II, 56,1.

Unstayed flat heads and covers can be designed by very specific rules and formulas given in this subsection. The stresses caused by pressure on these members are bending stresses, and the formulas include an allowance for additional edge moments induced when the head, cover, or blind flange is attached By bolts. Rules are provided for quick-opening closures because of the risk of incomplete attachment or opening while the vessel is pressurized. Rules for braced and stayed surfaces are also provided. 

The rest of the rules in Part AD for flat heads, bolted and studded connections, quick-actuating closures, and layered vessels essentially duphcate Division 1. The rules for support skirts are more definitive in Division 2.

Specialty tools are often classified by the main function they serve. Some examples are pulling tools such as hooks or pike poles, and prying tools such as pry bars. Some tools also have secondary uses. An axe is normally used for cutting however, a flat-head axe can also be used as a striking tool to drive another tool. 

Fred was a backgammon player, a fisherman at Flat Head Lake, a collector of Oriental rugs, and our good and respected friend. His presence will be missed, but his memory and his contribution will live on through his many friends and students. 

The work on surface coatings was carried out on mild steel panels to BS1449, Steel Plate, Part IB, CR3/FF and aluminium, 99.9% pure to BS1470, Grade SIC-H8. The adhesive test specimens consisted of flat headed bolts, 12.5 mm diameter, manufactured from mild steel round bar stock to BS970 Part I, stainless steel round bar stock to BS970 Part 1, 1/431/S29 and aluminium 99.9% pure. 

The rate of loss of bond strength was measured by applying selected paints to the flat heads of bolts and after immersion, bonding a second unpainted bolt to the test surface to form a doublet and breaking this specimen, after cure at 100% RH. 

Measurements of sound velocity at ultrasonic frequencies are usually made by an acoustic interferometer. An example of this apparatus11 is shown in Fig. 2. An optically flat piezo-quartz crystal is set into oscillation by an appropriate electrical circuit, which is coupled to an accurate means of measuring electrical power consumption. A reflector, consisting of a bronze piston with an optically flat head parallel to the oscillating face of the quartz, is moved slowly towards or away from the quartz by a micrometer screw. The electrical power consumption shows successive fluctuations as the distance between quartz and reflector varies between positions of resonance and non-resonance of the gas column. Measurement of the distance between resonance positions gives a value for A/2, and if /... 

The top and bottom of this temporary vessel were constructed of 24 inch (61 cm) diameter, 3/4 inch (1.9 cm) thick flat steel plate. Each flat head was attached using 16 bolts which were 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) in diameter. The explosive forces ripped apart the bolts and propelled the top-mounted heavy disk over 450 ft. (140 m) away. The bottom plate was found in the big hole in the ground. A fire occurred and was quickly extinguished. Fortunately the only injuries were a bruised knee and an eye irritation. 

The measurement of surface pH of paper has been applied extensively for quick determination of acidity or alkalinity or for screening purposes when a large number of tests must be made. The surface pH test methods may be required when the integrity of the paper must be retained. The surface pH can be measured by application of appropriate indicators or by use of a glass electrode of the required shape—i.e., a flat-head electrode. A number of detailed procedures have been described (6). 

Dished heads survive detonations better than do flat heads because of the more unfavorable incidence of flat heads.
