Description Of the Model. Travis et al. (1990) developed a model to describe the pharmacokinetics of benzene in mice, rats, and humans. The model contained five compartments, consisting of liver, fat, bone marrow, and muscle, and organs such as brain, heart, kidney, and viscera, connected by the arterial and venous blood pathways. Michaelis-Menten kinetics was assumed in all species, and occurred primarily in the liver, and to a lesser extent in the bone marrow. The species-specific physiological and chemical parameters were taken from the literature. The metabolic parameters were obtained by fitting the empirical data to the model. 

In the 14 laboratory-exposed fish, the insecticide concentrations in the muscle tissue ranged from 0.1 to 6.0 p.p.m. Concentrations in the viscera were generally higher, ranging from 0.1 to 8.8 p.p.m. In three exceptional fish, concentrations of 56.3, 93.8, and 273 p.p.m. were found in the viscera after oral ingestion of the insecticides. The most abundant insecticide was identified by infrared spectroscopy in the tissues of all fish samples, except the fish exposed to toxaphene and one control fish that showed no insecticide. DDT was identified in the second control sample. In five fish, more than one insecticide was identified by infrared. 

Grade of tuberculous change in percent was observed after 10 weeks in lymphnodes and viscera in groups of five infected guinea pigs fed with -250 mg/kg (recalculated from experimental section) test material per day for 1 week, respectively. 

In a single species, the distribution of various carotenoids between viscera, gonads and pooled testes and spines shows that a number of carotenoids are present but that few of them are predominant. In most cases five carotenoids, at most, account for at least 75% of total carotenoids. These observations are illustrated in Figure 26.7 and Table 26.3.
