The chemical industry prepared itself well for this battle. In 1901, the Verein hired the chemistry professor Dr. Curt Weigelt as its water expert. This was an exceptionally clever political move as the new representative was one of the leading German sewage experts and had served as general secretary of the German Fisheries Association in the 1890s. [Pg.191]

In particular the fisheries associations and the German Agricultural Council explicitly opposed the introduction of the concept of an Opferstrecke . Cf. B. Siemen, Die Diskussion um die Gewasserverschmutzung zur Zeit der Jahrhundertwende in Deutschland , Historicum, 32 (1993), p. 26. [Pg.191]

Phycotoxins accumulate in fish and shellfish because of the natural feeding habits of the respective organisms, rather than because of food handling or processing practices. The toxins causing the diseases discussed in this chapter are heat stable (Australia New Zealand Food Authority, 2001 Committee on Evaluation of the Safety of Fishery Products, 1991). Complete inactivation of saxitoxin (associated with PSP) requires at least ten minutes of exposure to 260°C dry heat. Brevetoxins (associated with NSP) were inactivated (i.e., to levels below the limit of assay detection using Japanese medaka [Oryzias latipes]) by exposure to 500°C heat for 10 to 15 minutes (Poli, 1988). Complete inactivation required 10 minutes exposure to 2760°C dry heat (Wannamacher, 2000). [Pg.179]

It is obvious that there is great potential for a successful commercial clam fishery in Alaska - if several problems can be resolved. First and foremost are the problems associated with PSP, caused by the presence of toxic metabolites produced by dinoflagellates of the genus Protogonyaulax ( ). [Pg.56]

Although relatively high doses (4 6 kGy) are required to kill food-borne parasites, much lower doses are adequate to prevent their reproduction and maturation resulting in loss of infectivity. Table 6 summarizes the effect of ionizing radiation on the most important parasites that may be associated with fishery products and meats [38]. Thus the parasitic roundworm Trichinella spiralis, which causes trichinosis, the pork and beef tapeworms, the protozoon in pork responsible for toxoplasmois, and various flukes that infest fish, can be rendered noninfective by low-dose radiation treatment. Doses of... [Pg.795]
