A large proportion of the above documentation may be available in the form of a fire safety manual that may have been produced as part of compliance with the British Standard BS 5588-12 2004 Managing Fire Safety.

Because there are many complexities in safety, many companies have additional mles covering particular safety problems. This may be a company safety handbook or similar document. The handbook may give details about such topics as fire protection and fire response procedures. It may list, cite or define standards that designers, maintenance staff, or supervisors must foUow. There may be separate manuals for design and maintenance personnel and particular operations or departments. The handbook may collect all safety manuals and operating procedures into one document system. 

Life safety and fire safety walkdowns are performed in K-Reactor and L- and P-Reactor Disassembly Areas in accordance with Procedure DMP 4.05 of Reactor Division Manual RD 4.1 (Ref 6-33). This procedure serves to inspect these areas on a monthly baas in order to identify and correct life safety defidencies within the Reactor Division. Each finding is reported to the appropriate manager and tracked ft>r resolution of the concern. 

The constructor will be required to provide a site safety manual which will address, for example, fire protection, accident reporting and analysis, work planning and training of construction personnel. The manual will also include what constitutes an environmental impact statement for the plant construction. Safety audits and inspections will be undertaken during construction. The emphasis will be on a leading indicator approach to the management of safety. The selected constmctor will comply with the CDM regulations (Reference 9.9). 

Buildings must contain a fire alarm or fire detection system that should automatically activate an alarm in the event of a fire. Install air conditioning, ducts, and any related equipment in accordance with NFPA 90A, Standard for Installation of Air Conditioning and Ventilating Systems. Ensure people can hear fire alarms over normal operational noise levels. Locate manual fire alarm stations near each exit. Inspect fire extinguishers at least monthly and ensure regular maintenance. Test fire alarm/detection systems once a quarter. Publish and enforce a Smoking Policy. Implement appropriate electrical safety policies and educate aU personnel about fire safety and response plans.

Process system emergency safety features (i.e. ESD, isolation, depressurization and blowdown) should be considered the prime safeguards for loss prevention over fire protection measures (i.e. fireproofing or barriers, firewater systems, manual fire fighting).
