The application of heat to wood results in degradation associated with chemical changes in the material. If carefully controlled, the property changes that are obtained due to thermal modification can be used for certain applications. There has been a great deal of commercial activity in this sector, mainly in Finland, France and The Netherlands. Thermal modification is discussed in Chapter 5. 

The Finnish ThermoWood Association was formed in December 2000. The main roles of the association are quality control of the material, product classification and R D activities. Although ThermoWood production is primarily located in Finland, there is limited production in Austria and Estonia a small-scale production facility was also due to start producing in Canada at the end of 2004. 

Element 110 - no name has been proposed or accepted by lUPAC for element 110. This element was first synthesized in a November 1994 experiment by a multi-national team of scientists working at the Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung (GSI) in Darmstadt, Germany. The scientific teams were from the GSI (Heavy Ion Research Center), Darmstadt, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna, Russia, Comenius University, Bratislava, Slovakia and the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. They used the nuclear reaction ° Pb ( Ni, n) 110. The longest half-life associated vdth this unstable element is 1.1 minute 10. 

It does not appear that the nephrotoxicity attributable to a2u-globulin syndrome is relevant to humans. Most epidemiological studies have not shown an association between gasoline exposure and renal cancer risk. However, a recent case-control study from Finland reported a significant association between renal cell cancer and gasoline that was dose dependent."...

Urszula Domahska has been professor. Faculty of Chemistry, Warsaw University of Technology since February 1995. She has been the Head of the Physical Chemistry Division since September 1991 and vice director of the Institute of Fundamental Chemistry (1988-1990). She had long-term scientific visits as visiting professor Laboratoire De Thermodynamique Ft D Analyse Chimique, University of Metz, France University of Turku, Finland Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry, University of Natal, South Africa Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, United States. Her interests have included such areas of physical chemistry as thermodynamics, especially thermodynamics of phase equilibria, VLE, LLE, SLE, high-pressure SLE, separation science, calorimetry, correlation and prediction of physical-chemical properties, and ionic liquids. She is a member of the Polish Chemical Society member of the Polish Association of Calorimetry and Thermal Analysis member of lUPAC Commission on Solubility member of International Association of Chemical Thermodynamics and scientific advisor at the Journal of Chemical Engineering Data.
