Filtration, geotextiles

Filtration Geotextiles act similar to a sand filter by allowing hquid to move through the soil while retaining upstream soil particles. For example, geotextiles are used to prevent soils... [Pg.413]

Fabrics perform one or more function in each installation generally there is one primary function. The five basic primary functions have been identified as separation, stabili2ation, reinforcement, filtration, and drainage. When the geotextile is impregnated with an impermeable material such as an asphaltic... [Pg.258]

Principle appHcations of needle-punched nonwovens for the 1990s include automotive, apparel components, blankets, carpeting, carpet pa dding, coating substrates, filtration, furniture, geotextiles, insulation, roofing substrates, and wall coverings. In 1990, the production of needle-punched fabric was estimated to approach 91,000 t and 606 million square meters (15). [Pg.153]

Spunbonded fabrics are effective filters in that they are layered stmctures of relatively fine fibers, the three-dimensional stmcture of which creates a torturous path. Even relatively thin spunbonded fabrics (eg, 0.2—0.25 mm) present a significant challenge to the passage of soil fines and are suitable for use in some filtration appHcations. The porosity of geotextile fabrics is classified by means of several procedures such as flux (volume flow/area per time) and equivalent opening size (EOS), which is a measure of the apparent pore size of the openings in the fabric. The flux measures the porosity to Hquid water, and the EOS measures the porosity to soHd particles of a known diameter. Literature is available on limitations of particular styles of fabrics within an apphcation (63). [Pg.173]

Geotextiles are the polymeric textile materials that are widely used in civil engineering to provide reinforcement, filtration, separation, drainage, erosion resistance and asphalt reinforcement. They take many forms nonwoven and woven textiles, grids, and openwork structures sandwiched between layers of nonwoven for lateral drainage. The principal... [Pg.164]

Geotextiles have become one of the most important fields of application for synthetic polymeric fibers. In view of their great importance, we describe them in a separate section. Textiles made of synthetic polymer fibers are used in various applications to address a variety of solids-related problems in civil engineering such as soil support, stabilization, separation and filtration, reinforcement of... [Pg.105]

Nonwoven spun These fabrics include spun-bonded, flash-spun, melt-blown, and mechanical nonwoven swirl. They are used in durable and disposable products that include interlining-interfacing (apparel), carpet backing, geotextile, roofing, industrial filtration media, surgical apparel, medical dressing, and diaper. [Pg.104]
