As the cost of metals and other traditional materials increases, so the cost of the cheaper thermoplastics become increasingly competitive. Even more important is the relative simplicity of the injection moulding, film blowing or extrusion operation which, to a large extent, determines the cost of the fabricated article. As further improvements in the productivity of plastics fabrication equipment continue to be made it seems likely that, assuming the problem of disposal can be overcome, plastics will become increasingly dominant in the packaging industry in the future. [Pg.52]

PCL is a semi-crystaUine polymer with a degree of crystallinity of 50%, a low Tg (-60 °C) and a melting point of 60 °C. Injection-molded samples of PCL exhibited a modulus of 400 MPa and a yield stress of 15 MPa. Moreover, the material can be processed by injection molding, film blowing and extrusion. The rate of crystallization of PCL is slower than that of conventional polymers, while poly(ether-ester)s are more flexible due to the presence of ether linkages. Although PCL and poly(DXO) resemble each other in their chemical structure, PCL is semicrystaUine whereas poly(DXO) is an amorphous polymer with a Tg of approximately -37 °C [37]. [Pg.300]

Melt elasticity is of considerable importance in understanding much of the behaviour of polyethylene when processing by film extrusion techniques and when blow moulding. The complex relationships observed experimentally here have been summarised by the author elsewhere. ... [Pg.223]

A plastic film, 0.1 mm thick, is required to have its orientation in the transverse direction twice that in the machine direction. If the film blowing die has an outer diameter of 100 mm and an inner diameter of 98 mm estimate the blow-up ratio which will be required and the lay flat film width. Neglect extrusion induced effects and assume there is no draw-down. [Pg.341]

According to the end use application, PEs are processed by various techniques, which include injection moulding, blow moulding, rotomoulding, and film extrusion. However, since the bulk of the processed material is used as film in the area of packaging, the discussion in this chapter focuses mainly on processing behavior and the ultimate properties of tubular blown film. [Pg.278]

Sometimes the hazy optical properties of polypropylene are a detriment to its use in thin films. To address this problem, as well as to improve physical properties and reduce material costs, we can orient the molecular chains by stretching the polymer film after it has left the extrusion die. There are two methods of orienting films, film blowing, shown in Fig. 11.6, and tentering, shown in Fig, 19.6. [Pg.310]

PHAs can be manufactured to many different materials and shapes, by processing on conventional equipment for polyolefins or other plastics, e. g. injection molding, extrusion, film blowing and fiber-spray molding [141]. Furthermore, they can be processed in latex (granules in water), or in solution... [Pg.283]
