Film coating additives plasticizers

In both shielding and decorative work demand has been growing for processes that will coat only selected parts of a component. For shielding usually it is only necessary to coat one surface (the inside) and any additional coating just adds to cost. Also, when an outer surface is coated there may be difficulty over the external colour finish—problems, say, over adhesion of paint to metallic film. Un-metallized plastics are comparatively easy to paint and if the outer surface is natural it either may be left like that or painted without trouble. For decorative applications selective coating can be helpful for visual effects—as an example, by contrast between bright nickel-chromium and matt black surfaces.

VIKON FPB is an effective base for producing a clear coating film on fabrics in making coated seat cover fabrics, etc. It can be compounded with other materials or additional plasticizers to produce these coatings. 

Film-coating was developed early in the 1950s to help resolve many of the problems associated with sugar-coating. It involves the application of a film-forming polymer onto the surface of a substrate (such as tablets, granules, and capsules). In addition to the polymer, the film contains plasticizers and colorants, which are needed to achieve the desired properties in the final dosage form. 

Dibutyl phthalate is used in pharmaceutical formulations as a plasticizer in film-coatings. It is also used extensively as a solvent particularly in cosmetic formulations such as anti-perspirants, hair shampoos and hair sprays. In addition to a number of industrial applications, dibutyl phthalate is used as an insect repellent, although it is not as effective as dimethyl phthalate. 

In oral solutions, glycerin is used as a solvent, sweetening agent, antimicrobial preservative, and viscosity-increasing agent. It is also used as a plasticizer and in film coat-ings. Glycerin is additionally used in topical formulations such as creams and emulsions. " ... 

The Tg of bulk ethylcellulose is in the range of 129-133 C, and therefore at ambient conditions films of ethylcellulose are substantially brittle. To be used in film coating applications, ethylcellulose requires the addition of pla.sticizer to improve film flexibility and toughness. The use of other plastics tends to be related to specialised needs and whether their advantages justify the additional cost, e.g. Aclar (trade name) may cost twenty times more than PET but is the nearest approach to an inert plastic and is approximately ten times less permeable than Saran (PVdC—polyvinylidene chloride) which is widely used as a film coating. However foil, even when thin (0.006 mm and above) remains the best barrier material, with newer techniques of film metallisation, especially where two contact layers are used, coming a close second best.
