Field data, manipulation

Optically non-linear materials show a change in their refractive index when exposed to electrical and electromagnetic fields, which opens the possibility to influence the propagation of light by means of external fields. Practical applications of these effects are in the sphere of optical data transmission and data manipulation. [Pg.308]

Testing should be planned in a protocol and a subsequent report produced after testing is complete. Formulas should be printed and compared to the URS. Test data should be entered to check calculations and data manipulations against expected results. Field protection setup should be confirmed. Plausibility checks on conditional formatting for cell entries should be conducted. [Pg.737]

Traditionally, the use of analytical models in environmental tracer studies has been far more widespread than numerical models. There are a number of reasons for this. Analytical models are easier to use and manipulate than numerical ones they require less hydrodynamic information and/or field data and the time required to build a transport model is much less than for a numerical model. Multiple examples of such models can be found in the literature for various tracers H, He, C, and C1 (e.g., Castro et al., 2000 Nolte et al., 1991 Schlosser et al., 1989 Solomon et al., 1996 Stute et al., 1992b Torgersen and Ivey, 1985). Generally, these models are either applied to a single aquifer in porous or fractured media or to one particular area within the aquifer such as recharge or discharge areas. [Pg.2722]

The ability to manipulate field data as it is obtained is the best way to speed success in field troubleshooting. For example, how much air is leaking into the incinerator duct at the sulfm plant in Aruba What size hole in the duct is needed to allow this much air leakage I can calculate the air flow based on the observed temperature rise in the duct due to afterburning of hydrogen sulfide in the incinerator effluent. Now I know that I need to find, and did find just yesterday, a 4-inch by 4-inch hole in the duct. [Pg.700]

Data is recorded to a computer hard drive by applying a magnetic field that manipulates particles within Ae disk medium. Srnaller particles allow for a greater density of information to be stored. Nickel nanowires respond to an apphed magnetic field, making them an attractive recording material for future data storage devices (55). [Pg.151]

Control decisions for variable rate application can be implemented either on-line or off-line. In the on-line, or sensor-based approach, the controlled equipment incorporates onboard sensors and the sensor data are used immediately for automatic control. In the off-line, or map-based approach, data are collected and stored in one operation, and the controlled equipment uses the information in a separate field operation. The map-based approach allows more flexibility in data manipulation and pre-processing but requires multiple field operations. Most systems currently available are map-based, but more on-line systems will likely become available as real-time sensing technologies become more mature. Hybrid systems which rely on a combination of both mapped and real-time data may also come into more widespread use. [Pg.53]

Both instrument design and capabilities of fluorescence spectroscopy have greatly advanced over the last several decades. Advancements include solid-state excitation sources, integration of fiber optic technology, highly sensitive multichannel detectors, rapid-scan monochromators, sensitive spectral correction techniques, and improved data manipulation software (Christian et al., 1981 Lochmuller and Saavedra, 1986 Cabaniss and Shuman, 1987 Lakowicz, 2006 Hudson et al., 2(X)7). The cumulative effect of these improvements have pushed the limits and expanded the application of fluorescence techniques to numerous scientific research fields. One of the more powerful advancements is the ability to obtain in situ fluorescence measurements of natural waters (Moore, 1994). [Pg.190]

In the immediate post-war period, the U.S. Department of Defense was interested in pho-tochromic materials for potential eye-protection in case of atomic or nuclear explosions. Considerably interest in this field was demonstrated at a government-sponsored symposium at Duke University in 1961. At that time, much research had been undertaken in a number of laboratories, Schoenberg in Egypt had developed novel spiropyrans. National Cash Register Company studied the use of these materials in data storage and data manipulation products. [Pg.4]

The text form for parameters uses white space or commas to separate the fields (columns) of the parameter tiles. They can be read by ordinary text editors, w ord processors, etc. In the text form, param eters are easy to m odify but not easy to com pare, stn dy, etc. Many database program s are capable of reading column s of text as a database, h owever. Wh ile spreadsheets are n ot. per se, databases, they can be useful for examining parameter sets. Microsoft Excel, for example, can read the text form of a param eter file and pn t the data in a form easily manipulated as a matrix or a database. The text form of parameters are stored, by default only, in Tart files. [Pg.197]
