Effective fetch

Environmental pollution is only one but probably the most obvious aspect of its action. Of no less importance is the sudden appearance of the plethora of man-made compounds on our planet which may affect in an absolutely unpredictable way the course of natural evolution of the biosphere. An accelerated rate of formation of new varieties of microorganisms caused by the wide utilization of antibiotics might be considered as an instructive manifestation of the unpredictable and far-fetched effects caused by the operation of novel anthropogenic factors of natural selection. [Pg.32]

Also in the 17th century John Evelyn wrote in his Herbal, "If the medicinal properties of its leaves, bark and berries were fully known, I cannot tell what our countryman could all for which he might not fetch a remedy from every hedge, either for sickness or wounds." Evelyn also claimed that elder would help assist longevity and was effective "against all infirmities, whatever."... [Pg.13]

The fact that uncouplers are lipophilic weak acids (see above) explains their ability to collapse transmembrane pH gradients. Their lipophilic character allows uncouplers to diffuse relatively freely through the phospholipid bilayer. Because they are weak acids, uncouplers can release a proton to the solution on one side of the membrane and then diffuse across the membrane to fetch another proton. The chemiosmotic theory thus provides a simple explanation of the effects of uncouplers on oxidative phosphorylation. [Pg.319]

The self-condensation of glycine to triglycine at pH 6.7-8.9 is increased 10-20 fold in the presence of catalysts of which 1,2,4-triazole is one of the best. The reaction is not noted in basic solutions but the effect is maximal at the pH thought to be that of primitive oceans. The linking of triazole with prebiotic peptide syntheses is speculative and far fetched but not irrational (81C59). [Pg.786]

For the MARNET Station Arkona (13°51.72 E, 54°52.98 N), the effective fetch was calculated (see Fig. 7.7). For this purpose, 18 half-lines at a distance of 10° up to the coastline were drawn in a sector of +/-90° around the half-line pointing in westerly direction,... [Pg.154]

The wave heights in the Atlas zur Ermittlung der Wellenhdhe in der siidlichen Ostsee (Schmager, 1979) were calculated on this basis. Quandt (1980) calculated effective fetches of the B altic Sea for numerous positions as afunction of the wind direction (see Fig. 7.8). [Pg.155]

From Fig. 7.8, it can be seen that effective fetches of more than 350 km do not occur in the Baltic Sea, and in empirical calculation methods, this value should be assumed as the upper limit for the determination of extreme sea state conditions in the Baltic Sea. In case of northerly to north easterly winds, such fetches occur in the Bay of Gdansk and in the sea area... [Pg.155]

The wave number-frequency spectrum of wind waves was measured at low wind velocity, 2.5 m s 1, and at two different fetches. Dominant dm-cm-scale wind waves are steep enough and are characterized by asymmetric profile and parasitic ripples generation even at such a low wind velocity, so that we expect that nonlinear effects can be quite strong. Co-located measurements of wave height were conducted using a wave gauge. The... [Pg.134]

The wind wave tank of the University of Hamburg is 26 m long and 1 m wide. It is filled with lfesh water with a mean water depth of 0.5 m. The wind-tunnel height is 1 m, and the effective (maximum) fetch is 19 m. All measurements reported herein were performed at a fetch of 14.5 m and at wind speeds between 2 and 10 m s"1 generated by a radial blower. In the measurement and rain area, the metallic plates of the tank s roof were removed and, on the leeward side, replaced by Styrofoam panels to ensure the unattenuated transmission of the microwaves (Figure 2). At the windward side of the rain area plates of microwave absorbing material were vertically mounted in the direction of the specular-reflected radar beams. [Pg.147]

Lake size and morphology influence the thermally induced stratification of the water column and its stability, as there is a relationship between the depth of the seasonal thermocline and the maximum fetch of the water body the longer the fetch (i.e. the distance over which wind acts on the water), the deeper the thermocline. The potential effects of stratification on productivity and anoxicity have been discussed in Sections 3.2.2, 3.2.3, 3.2.4 and 3.3.4. [Pg.109]

Here V (m/sec) is the wind speed at a height of 9 m above the water surface, and F (km) is the effective fetch. (The effective fetch is the average fetch projected onto the wind direction over a 90° arc, which is centered on the wind arrow.) The maximum horizontal component of the water-particle velocity at the bottom is, according to first-order wave theory. [Pg.72]
