Fertilizer with ammonium nitrate

On May 1-2, 1974, a field from the Zhdanov Collective Farm in the Krivoozersk Region was treated with polychlorpinen. On May 15-25, 57 female collective farm workers worked in this field with no complaints. From May 30-June 6 the field was fertilized with ammonium nitrate, and on June 8 it rained. When, on June 11, the same 57 women worked in this field again, by 2pm all developed acute gas poisoning (the concentration of polychlorpinen in the air over the field three days later was only 0.04 mg/m3).

Agricultural uses for ammonium thiosulfate take advantage of both the sulfur and ammonium content by blending with other nitrogen fertilizers such as urea (71). Some foHar-spray fertilizers contain ammonium thiosulfate together with other metal micronutrients (72,73). Ammonium thiosulfate or mixtures with ammonium nitrate can also be used as desiccants and defoHants ia crop-beariag plants such as cotton (qv), soybean, alfalfa, rice, and peppers (74,75). 

Straight ammonium fertilizers which comply with Directive 80/876/EEC and compound fertilizers where the nitrogen content is >28% by weight (a compound fertilizer contains ammonium nitrate plus phosphorus and/or potash).

It is advisable to use ammonium nitrate with as little as possible of the inert material usually added to ammonium nitrate to prevent its caking. According to the same source, the quantity of inert material should not exceed 0.4% of NH4N03 (fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate usually contains 2-5% added matter). 

Fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate prilled with fuel oil is generally used in the U.S.A. for making explosives other than permitted types (see Vol. HI). 

Urea may be supplied either in solid form or as a liquid. For liquid compound fertilizers, urea is generally used in combination with ammonium nitrate as an aqueous solution to obtain liquids containing 32% to 35% nitrogen. 

Operating experience and TVA studies have identified several combinations of materials that are incompatible in blends and should be avoided (1) unammoniated superphosphates react with urea, and the result is wetting and caking and (2) urea in contact with ammonium nitrate forms an extremely soluble hygroscopic mixture that liquefies in the presence of only minute amounts of moisture. Therefore, these two materials can never be used together in the same blend. Essentially all other combinations of available fertilizer materials are compatible in blends. 

This explosives manufacture is simple. The fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate is powdered with a mortar pestle or ground in a similar manner. This should be done until the consistancy of face powder is obtained. This powdering can also be accomplished by dissolving the AN prills in boiling water (30% water, 70% AN). This liquor might need to be gently heated to get the AN to completely dissolve. This should be done in a pyrex or preferably stainless steel container. 

This experiment must be done carefully because ammonium nitrate can explode. In fact, one of the greatest industrial disasters in U.S. history occurred in 1947 in Texas, when a ship loaded with ammonium nitrate for use as fertilizer exploded and killed nearly 600 people. 

Ammoniugi chloride, NH Cl, is a white salt, with a bitter salty taste. It is used in dry batteries (Chap. 14) and as a flux in soldering and welding. Ammonium sulfate, (N 144)2804, is an important fertilizer and ammonium nitrate, NH4NO3, mixed v>dth other substances, is used as an explosive, and also is used as a fertilizer.

Put several pounds of fertilizer grade ammonium nitrate in a pan. Pour in enough wood alcohol (methanol) to cover the fertilizer. Then stir it until a lot of it has dissolved. Next, let it set a few minutes to allow the impurities to settle to the bottom along with the undissolved ammonium nitrate. 

Biostimulation of the shoreline microbes was effected through addition of fertilizers. Two products were applied Inipol EAP22, a urea-based product designed to stick to oil, and Customblen a slow-release granular fertilizer containing ammonium nitrate, calcium phosphate and ammonium phosphate. These products were selected to minimize nutrient losses with the tides and thereby optimize nutrient input to the oiled areas. By late summer 1989 approximately 120 km of shoreline had been treated in this way.
