Production of ammonia (NH ) Anhydrous (dry) ammonia is the fifth most produced industrial compound. The Haber-Bosch process uses steam on hot coke, which is mostly used in South Africa. In the United States, it is mostly produced from partial combustion of natural gas (methane) or by combining several gases using steam. Other methods use coke-oven gas, refinery gas (mostly methane), or even solar energy. Ammonia is toxic if inhaled and has a high pH value when mixed with water (hydration) to form ammonium hydroxide (NH OH), which has many uses, including as a household cleaner. Ammonia forms many compounds, including ammonium nitrate in fertilizer, rocket fuel, and explosives. Ammonia is also explosive when mixed with mercury or silver or when mixed as part of nitrocellulose. 

Ammonium nitrate is an excellent fertilizer because it is highly soluble in water and contains 35% nitrogen by weight. Flow-ever, it is also an excellent explosive that is insensitive to shock and heat. When mixed with fuel oil, ammonium nitrate detonates on initiation with a primer explosion. Mixed with additives, urea is used in soHd fertilizers of various formulations, eg, urea—ammonium phosphate (UAP), urea—ammonium sulfate (UAS), and urea—phosphate (urea + phosphoric acid). Concentrated solutions of urea and ammonium nitrate (UAN) solutions (80—85 wt%) have a high nitrogen content but low crystallization point, suitable for easy transportation, pipeline distribution, and direct spray appHcation.

Nitrogen solutions consist of fertilizer product combinations, eg, ammonium nitrate —ammonia, urea—ammonium nitrate—ammonia, urea—ammonium nitrate, and urea—ammonia solutions. Mixed fertilizers cover a broad range and can be loosely defined as fertilizers which contain chemically mixed nitrogen, phosphoms, and potassium (N—P—K). Examples are ammonium phosphate—potash mixtures and ammonium phosphate nitrates. 

Nitrophosphate fertilizer is made by digesting phosphate rock with nitric acid. This is the nitrophosphate route leading to NPK fertilizers as in the mixed-acid route, potassium and other salts are added during the process. The resulting solution is cooled to precipitate calcium nitrate, which is removed by filtration methods. The filtrate is neutralized with ammonia, and the solution is evaporated to reduce the water content. The process of prilling may follow. The calcium nitrate filter cake can be further treated to produce a calcium nitrate fertilizer, pure calcium nitrate, or ammonium nitrate and calcium carbonate. 

Uhde-Hibemia A process for making a mixed ammonium nitrate - ammonium sulfate fertilizer (ASN) - which is less liable to explode than ammonium nitrate. Sulfuric acid is added to aqueous ammonium nitrate and ammonia gas passed in. The double salt crystallizes out. Additives are used to improve the handling characteristics of the product. Ammonium nitrate (NH NO, also known as Norway saltpeter ) is mainly used as a fertilizer. It is also known as the chemical that was mixed with diesel fuel to create the explosion that demohshed the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in 1995. 

The ammonium salt produced or consumed in largest amounts is ammonium nitrate. It is used widely as a fertilizer, and is the leading nitrogen fertilizer in the world. An advantage of this compound over other ammonium fer-tihzers is that it provides both nitrate and ammonia to soil without changing the pH. Another application of tumblers is to the manufacture of mixed fertilizers, in which solid ammonium nitrate, liquid ammonia, liquid phosphoric acid, and liquid sulfuric acid are charged separately and reacted. The incidental agglomeration is excessive, however, and the process must be followed by appropriate crushing and size classification.
