Ferrocene poly

The interest in chemically modified electrodes that developed during the 1980s resulted in the synthesis of many redox-active polymers and surface-confined redox couples, including ferrocenes. These were subsequently adapted to electrochemical biosensors, and both surface-confined and polymeric ferrocenes have been widely used. Typically, polymeric ferrocenes that have been exploited in this way include poly(vinyl) ferrocenes, polysiloxanes, polyethylene oxide with covalently attached ferrocenes, poly(allylamine) ferrocene, and polacrylamide ferrocene cross-linked hydrogels." ...

Functionalized conducting monomers can be deposited on electrode surfaces aiming for covalent attachment or entrapment of sensor components. Electrically conductive polymers (qv), eg, polypyrrole, polyaniline [25233-30-17, and polythiophene/23 2JJ-J4-j5y, can be formed at the anode by electrochemical polymerization. For integration of bioselective compounds or redox polymers into conductive polymers, functionalization of conductive polymer films, whether before or after polymerization, is essential. In Figure 7, a schematic representation of an amperomethc biosensor where the enzyme is covalendy bound to a functionalized conductive polymer, eg, P-amino (polypyrrole) or poly[A/-(4-aminophenyl)-2,2 -dithienyl]pyrrole, is shown. Ferrocene has been extensively used as a building block to prepare organo-metallic polymers and heteroatom-bridged poly(metallocenes)(G )-(G ")(Fig 4).

The third approach has been to graft the redox couple by means of a covalent bond to the polyelectrolyte backbond as described early in 1965 in the book of Cassidy and Run [20]. Several of these systems are charged polymers in at least one oxidation state, like poly(viologen), poly(vinylferrocene), and so on. Examples of polyelectrolytes like polyacrylic acid with covalently bound viologen were reported by Fernandez, Katz and coworkers [21], hydroquinone [22] and Anson et al. with bound ferrocene [23].

Abstract This review describes recent results in the field of poly(aryleneethynylene)s (PAEs) that contain metal ions in the polymer backbone, or in the polymer side chain. This work is focused primarily on polymers possessing ligands of metal complexes as part of the aryle-neethynylene chain. PAEs with porphyrinylene in the backbone have also been addressed. Synthetic routes toward the polymers, as well as their photochemical, photophysical, and electrochemical properties, are presented. Monodisperse oligo(phenyleneethynylene)s with terminal metal complexes or with a ferrocene and thiol at each end are mentioned.

Poly(propylene amine) dendrimers containing 4, 8, and 64 amidoferrocene peripheral units have also been incorporated in the highly ordered channels of mesoporous silica obtaining a novel type of redox-active materials.
