Federated data access

This hybrid model solves the problems associated with federated data access across the public network, and with internally maintained local database, by combining the two approaches and automating the processes to maintain data currency and accuracy through the content management subsystem and a new software module for dynamic retrieval of additional datasets and automatic updates for revised datasets.

Collaboration between PRISM related data archives in the development of data networking and federated archive architectures is also going on. When you build a design from components, you don t need to know how they are represented as objects or as instances of a classes or know how the connectors between components work.2 In federated systems, just as in 00 programs, each component is a collection of software it is chosen for the support it provides of the corresponding business function and uses local data representations best suited to the software. Just as in OO programs, objects must access the information held by other objects, so in a component architecture, components intercommunicate through well-defined interfaces so as to preserve mutual encapsulation. 

A key issue will be the integration and federation of various data sources that are already available. One can imagine a data environment where all data from toxicoge-nomics to every biochemical assay around a compound is streamlined and easily accessible for every researcher. Having this kind of global molecule profile will also make it possible to describe the differences between compounds in detail and finally lead to novel ideas on how to improve lead compounds to ultimately make better drugs.

The TAMBIS Project (Transparent Access to Multiple Bioinformatics Information Sources) [Baker et al. 1991] started in the late 1990s at the University of Manchester and has developed a powerful data model together with a knowledge base affording near-natural language queries to federated distributed biological databases.
