Features and Designs

Criteria for selection of equipment and components for commercial supercritical fluid processing plants for the food processing industry are listed and discussed. Unique features and designs for SCF food processing are specified. Requirements for vessels, heat exchangers, instrumentation, piping, fluid transport devices and typical ancillary equipment are reviewed.

The design constraints identified as necessary to control system hazards are passed to the implementers and assurers of the individual system components along with standards and other requirements. Success is determined through feedback provided by test reports, reviews, and various additional hazard analyses. At the end of the development process, the results of the hazard analyses as well as documentation of the safety-related design features and design rationale should be passed on to the maintenance group to be used in the system evolution and sustainment process. 

The frameworks of both Fisher (described in Section 5.1.3) and Porter support the idea that the supply chain is fundamental to competitive success. Certainly, products with superior features and design contribute greatly. However, innovation in the supply chain dimension is often on a par with product design as a determinant of success. After all, it is the supply chain that puts the product in the hands of end-users.

A comprehensive description of manufacturer-specific information, such as catalog number, model number, type, and so on, can be found in the company s catalog. Many catalogs have a section of engineering data that may have more extensive tables of dimensions, enclosure features, and design calculations. Some manufactures even have separate technical data books (Leeson, 1994). 

For example, popular cell phone designs in India don t just have fewer functions to achieve a lower price point. They accommodate the spotty electricity service by having a flashlight feature and designs... 

The existing types of electrochemical storage systems vary according to the nature of the chemical reaction, structural features, and design. This reflects the large number of possible applications. 

As indicated in the last report, significant reduction in cycle times with consequent increase in productivity has not been seen, nor is expected. But in terms of choice of equipment features and designs for delivering the quality a company requires, the wider range of designs available presents both a challenge and an opportimity.
