Little is known regarding the quantitative ability of sunscreens to prevent UVR-induced adverse effects other than sunburn. For example, there is no information on the threshold or dose-response for UVR-induced immunosuppression and DNA damage (237), but there is strong evidence that regular use of Sunscreens reduces the incidence of precancerous lesions. A large population study in Australia proved the effectiveness of sunscreens in reducing the incidence of solar keratosis (291). Solar keratosis is a known precursor for squamous cell carcinoma and an established risk factor for basal cell carcinoma and melanoma. [Pg.466]

Thus, we assume a reduced ALA penetration or uptake in lesions such as verruca vulgaris, thick solar keratosis, or psoriatic lesions due to the hyperkeratotic areas which may limit penetration of ALA and, in addition, of the exciting light. The weak fluorescence in Kaposi s sarcoma or the lack of fluorescence in melanoma or naevi is probably mainly due to the high pigmentation of these tissues and the consequent lower absorption as well as emission of light. [Pg.190]

It is used in the palliative treatment of careinoma of the breast, pancreas, prostrate, eolon and hepatoma for which surgery or irradiation is not possible. It is also formd to be beneficial in tropical treatment of premalignant solar keratosis. [Pg.815]
