Family of Love

In a bold defense of the Families of Love in 1580, called an Apology for the Service of Love, the Family describes how death is life. They assert that sin is repairable in life. The Apology is set as a three-way conversation in which the Exile, a Familist, seeks to convince two curious individuals that the Family of Love was neither heretical nor ... [Pg.227]

With the Goddess fertilized one way or another, the Rose Croix Knight was reborn in life as described by the Family of Love. The newborn issue of the sacred marriage emerged in the Rose Croix Knight as the new King. The Dervish maxim is ... [Pg.230]

Sir Francis Bacon s foster father. Sir Nicholas Bacon, was responsible for the appointment of a prominent Family of Love personage, Robert Seale to court office. The Bacon and Seale families both kept country houses at St Albans. Given these close ties, it is not surprising that Sir Francis Bacon was to use the Family s s5mibolism of resurrection on earth in the Knights Rose Croix ceremony of St George. [Pg.232]

There is another confirmation of the close philosophical ties between Sir Francis Bacon and the Family of Love. While inveighing against moral injustices in the High Commission s application of the law. Sir Francis Bacon was to call upon a substantial portion of the Family of Love s Petition to James 7. ... [Pg.232]

The Family of Love or Houses of Love, a term also used recently by the Children of God cult, was formerly a mystery school or fellowship of scholarly adepts dedicated to preserve Mystery truths. One of its most enthusiastic members, Christopher Plantin, was a French printer in Antwerp. He published the 1577 edition of Alicat s Emblemata, which first contained the Rosicrucians enigmatic AA emblem. [Pg.287]

We have seen that the Rosicrucian route leads back to Anatolia, to the Indo-Hittites and the scientific philosophies of metallurgy, alchemy, medicine and immortality. This route is relatively obscure because of the Rosicrucians traditional low profile and intentional lack of records. Over the last three thousand years, discovery of significant documents such as the Corpus Hermeticum, Picatrix and writings of the Family of Love have been rare. [Pg.336]

Much of this work also had to be done at home, which took away precious time from our families. Their love, understanding, patience and support was indispensable for us to carry on with the seemingly endless series of chapters to be drafted, read or revised. [Pg.721]

There is a family of enzymes that catalyze the attachment of amino acids to then-cognate tRNAs, aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases. There is one or more of these enzymes for each of the 20 amino acids that occur commonly in proteins. Each of these enzymes recognizes (a) a specific amino acid and (b) its cognate tRNA. Imagine a soup of 20 amino acids and 20 tRNAs, one for each amino acid. For example, the aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase for, saline would specifically pick valine out of the soup and catalyze its attachment to the tRNA for valine, tRNA . Simply, we can write the product of the reaction as val-tRNA . This is a lovely example of the role of molecular recognition in a critical life process. [Pg.172]

In the summer of 1982, after devoting a year to her home care, he lost his wife, Mary Elma, to cancer. His marriage to Mary Elma had been such a mainstay of his life that he was committed to the institution of matrimony. Within the year he fell in love with and married Anne Parker Gill, of Swarthmore, PA, thus expanding his family to include the growing families of her two sons. Bill and Doug, to whom he devoted much time in his later years. Within the next few years, he and Anne visited the USSR, invited by the Soviet Peace Committee to promote the World Federalists Association position, and China, invited by Academia Sinica. His five children, Patricia (b. 1938), Susanna (b. 1940), Sarah Shoemaker (Sally, b. 1944), Judith Spencer (b. 1946) and Charles Coale IV (b. 1948) were a source of much pride and pleasure to him. [Pg.288]

To sum up the whole, we may safely say that he was ahke eminent as a practical chemist and mechanic, as a patriot in public, and a friend in private life, as presiding over the interests of the miner and of the farmer, and in fine as the guardian and overseer of the large family of his native poor It will not indeed be easy to find another whose talents have been at once more biilhant and more useful, who has been more admired and more loved by his country, than John Gottlieb Gahn (15). [Pg.172]

This section discusses personal relationships during retirement. When you complete it, you should be able to build better relationships, create a strong inner-circle support system, do a better job of handling family demands, and explain the difference between the two languages of love and decide which best fits your comfort zone. [Pg.150]

If you didn t get into your first-choice school, would you be a less worthy person No. Would your family stop loving you No. Would the world come crashing down around you Of course not. [Pg.31]

If the meat of this book lies in archives and interviews and its brains lie in the history and sociology of science, this book s heart springs from my family s love and kindness. For these I thank Carol Sue and Don Frickel Shelby and Rocco Verretta Anne, Dave, Devin, and Justin Divecha Susan Lauffer and Jim, Rebeckah, and Hannah Fussell. Mostly, though, I thank Beth Fussell. For her patience, strength, critical eye, and humor I am deeply grateful, and I dedicate this effort to her. [Pg.213]

Psychedelics, which once helped create a "generation gap, have also had the effect of improving family relationships, as happened for psychologist Richard Alpert. After taking a large dose of LSD one night, he went to a family reunion the next day. His brother asked, "How s the nut business This "digging at each other was typical of his family it "was our form of love. It was a Jewish, middle-class tradition ... [Pg.113]

I think there is only one way to science—or to philosophy, for that matter to meet a problem, to see its beauty and fall in love with it to get married to it, and to live with it happily, till death do ye part—unless you should meet another and even more fascinating problem, or unless, indeed, you should obtain a solution. But even if you do obtain a solution, you may then discover, to your delight, the existence of a whole family of enchanting though perhaps difficult problem children for whose welfare you may work, with a purpose, to the end of your days. [Pg.362]

Her early endeavors to characterize the branch points in starch, and pursuit of the then-elusive a-(l — 6) linkage in starch, drew Dr. Jeanes to dextrans, since these polysaccharides contain a-(l — 6) linkages as their main structural feature. Dextrans are a family of D-glucans produced micro-bially from sucrose they contain from 50 to 100% a-(l — 6) linkages, depending on the microbial strain used. Dr. Jeanes became an authority on dextran sources, structures, and industrial applications. She published comprehensive bibliographies on dextran, the first in 1950 and another in 1978. These were a labor of love, produced with much effort before the days of automated data retrieval. [Pg.8]

Don t you get sick and tired of just steaming or boiling vegetables Of course, you do. That s one of the main reasons why we don t eat enough vegetables. Here s an easy-to-make change of pace that you and your family will love. And so will your heart. [Pg.267]

Tetramethyldiaminobenzhydrylphosphinous is said to be one of the longest dictionary entries, but the length is not all that unusual for organic chemicals. Some chemists have been known to wax creative when presented with the opportunity to name a new base structure. One new material was dubbed buckminsterfullerene because it resembles a geodesic dome, a design originated by the architect R. Buckminster Fuller. Barbituric acid, the starting material for the family of compounds known as barbiturates, is said to have been named after Barbara, the love interest of the scientist who first isolated the compound. [Pg.285]

I (CEH) thank Fred Lewis and James Guillet for introducing me to the world of photochemistry and photophysics. I also thank my family for their patience and understanding in allowing me to spend precious time preparing this book. This demonstration of love by Karen, Abbie, and Austin makes this book invaluable. [Pg.1]

By then, the Tompkinses had two young daughters, Quincey and Summer (the latter so named, Susie says, because she was born on the first day of 1967 s summer of love, the zenith of the hippie movement). Neither the business nor his expanding family deterred Doug from taking off for months-long adventures—it was something he said he had to do. [Pg.26]

Sowden s family life was characteristically dynamic. His wife, Pat, was an ardent participant in both community and university activities and, when the demands of her family permitted, loved to travel with her husband. The three Sowden children, John Warren, Shawn Susan, and Steven Kerry, reflect the outgoing as well as the reserved nature of their father. They share his love of the outdoors, and show the variable effects of being raised and loved by strongly individualistic parents. [Pg.9]
