Finally, Haber knew how to blend the talents of skilled technicians, industrialists, and scientists from different disciplines. His English collaborator, Robert Le Rossignol, would develop the seals needed to maintain high pressures in an experimental chamber. A highly skilled mechanic, Friedrich Kirchenbauer, would build precision equipment needed for the reaction. Haber later thanked Le Rossignol and Kirchenbauer in his Nobel Prize speech and shared patents with Le Rossignol and prize money with both men. [Pg.65]

I have enjoyed preparing this Second Edition and am especially indebted to Robert Pallant, who was volunteered as Information Scientist, and to David Cox of Pains Fireworks who provided valuable advice and archive material together with some of his splendid photographs. Grateful thanks are also due to Mr. John Deeker who kindly agreed to check and give his seal of approval on the finished work. [Pg.172]

Reduced to their bare verbal bones, both terms just defined by Pemety prominently appear in one of Duchamp s last ready-mades (MD-196). The immediate function of this minimalist object avant la lettre), inscribed with the artist s monogram M. D., was to serve as a kind of metallic seal set upon the box containing the deluxe edition (32 authorized examples in all) of Robert Lebel s Sur Marcel Duchamp, published the next year to great acclaim. As executed by Duchamp in Paris during the summer of 1958, this is simplicity itself a deep blue, enameled metal (iron) plaque, measuring 15 X 20 cm., which bears an inscription, the kind once familiar to Parisians, neatly laid out in white letters (sans serif). This object, which Jean Clair calls a Ready-made imite, exactly simulates the kind of announcements one formerly saw, a century ago, posted on newly erected apartment buildings. The statement it bears is concise, to say the least ... [Pg.346]

I have conducted experiments in air-tight sealed glass Vessels, to ascertain whether the weight of the metals increases on account of the heat. These attempts showed that the opinion of the celebrated Robert Boyle is false, for without the admission of external air, the weight of the burned metal remains the same. 2... [Pg.513]

Basically, UHT milk is heat treated to 138 to 150°C (280 to 302°F) for one or two seconds by a process that renders the milk commercially sterile. The product is then placed in containers by an aseptic filling process and packaged in hermetically sealed containers. This combination of heat treatment and packaging results in milk that can be stored unrefrigerated for extended periods of time (Miller 1985 Arnold and Roberts 1982). [Pg.388]

A solvothermal process is one in which a material is either recrystallized or chemically synthesized from solution in a sealed container above ambient temperature and pressure. The recrystallization process was discussed in Section 1.5.1. In the present chapter we consider synthesis. The first solvothermal syntheses were carried out by Robert Wilhelm Bunsen (1811-1899) in 1839 at the University of Marburg. Bunsen grew barium carbonate and strontium carbonate at temperatures above 200°C and pressures above 100 bar (Laudise, 1987). In 1845, C. E. Shafhautl observed tiny quartz crystals upon transformation of freshly precipitated silicic acid in a Papin s digester or pressure cooker (Rabenau, 1985). Often, the name solvothermal is replaced with a term to more closely refer to the solvent used. For example, solvothermal becomes hydrothermal if an aqueous solution is used as the solvent, or ammothermal if ammonia is used. In extreme cases, solvothermal synthesis takes place at or over the supercritical point of the solvent. But in most cases, the pressures and temperatures are in the subcritical realm, where the physical properties of the solvent (e.g., density, viscosity, dielectric constant) can be controlled as a function of temperature and pressure. By far, most syntheses have taken place in the subcritical realm of water. Therefore, we focus our discussion of the materials synthesis on the hydrothermal process. [Pg.171]

Sir Francis Bacon s foster father. Sir Nicholas Bacon, was responsible for the appointment of a prominent Family of Love personage, Robert Seale to court office. The Bacon and Seale families both kept country houses at St Albans. Given these close ties, it is not surprising that Sir Francis Bacon was to use the Family s s5mibolism of resurrection on earth in the Knights Rose Croix ceremony of St George. [Pg.232]
