Satan is the ruler over the fallen angels, always struggling against the Kingdom of God by seducing humans to sin. Satan disrupts God s plan for salvation and slanders the saints to reduce the number of those chosen for the Kingdom of God. Fallen angels are securities that started out as investment grade bonds and have ended up, or are expected to end up in high-yield territory, such as Marconi and KPN. The former rose substantially before the downgrade to high yield, as it formed a big part of the European high-yield index, and high-yield investors had no choice but to buy the name and bid up the price. 

Due to a combination of aggressive underwriting in the late 1990s, a meltdown in the telecommunication sector, a record number of fallen angel defaults, and a recession in manufacturing, defaults in the United States also soared in 2001 and 2002. The US default rate ended 2001 at 12.9% and the third quarter of 2002 at 14.3%, both unprecedented levels. The average annual default rate in the United States for the period 1980 through 2000 was just 3.4%, with a peak of 8.7% recorded in 1990. 

The average time to default in Europe was a very brief 2.1 and 2.5 years in 2001 and 2002, respectively. This statistic was substantially lower than the US average of approximately 3.4 and 4.9 years in 2001 and 2002, excluding fallen angel defaults. Europe s accelerated time to default was a result of the aggressive 1999 and 2000 new issuance rating mix.

September 2002. Hence, investors lost approximately 86% of par value on 2001 and 2002 defanlts. In the United States, the weighted average recovery rates were 30% of par in 2001 and 23% of par in 2002. Excluding fallen angel defanlts though, which in 2001 boosted average recovery rates and in 2002 depressed recovery rates, US recovery rates were just 15% of par in 2001 and had improved to 28% of par in 2002. 

The number and size of fallen angels in the recent past show the importance of independent buy-side research. Internal ratings might help investors to generate investment decisions which avoid fallen angels or to sell their exposure early enough before the corporate bond s price deteriorates. Furthermore, quantitative models have helped us to react very quickly to relevant information such as an announced debt financed takeover to adjust our internal ratings.

Zander s new company had at one time led the cellular telephone market, but did so no longer. Other customer meetings reinforced Nextel s message.
