Fairness issues

If you do not listen to people, you cannot expect them to listen to you. Communication is a two-way activity. Do not make assumptions about what people know, think, or want done about risks. Take the time to find out what people are thinking. Often, people are more concerned about issues such as trust, credibility, competence, control, voluntariness, fairness, and compassion than about mortality statistics and the details of QRA. Use techniques such as interviews, focus groups, and surveys to gauge what people are thinking. [Pg.61]

Quite separate and distinct from this kind of science was the large body of research, both experimental and theoretical, which can be denoted by the term technical magnetism. Indeed, I think it is fair to say that no other major branch of materials science evinces so deep a split between its fundamental and technical branches. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that the quantum- and statistical-mechanical aspects have become so ethereal that they are of no real concern even to sophisticated materials scientists, while most fundamental physicists (Neel is an exception) have little interest in the many technical issues their response is like Pauli s. [Pg.143]

Risk assessment has usually been divided into four different and well-defined phases to ensure that all important issues will be given a fair consideration. The phases of systematic risk assessment include ... [Pg.327]

Point to Consider People in tl>e community are often more concerned about such issues as trust, credibility, competence, control, voluntariness. fairness, caring, and compassion tlian about mortality statistics and tl>e details of quantitative risk assessment. [Pg.529]

Per-Olov Lowdin established both the Quantum Chemistry Group at Uppsala and the Quantum Theory Project at Gainesville through his personal and scientific stature and he was unquestionably the Director of both operations. Several prominent scientists were invited during the first years to be Associate Directors and to maintain the spirit when "the Force" was absent. Yngve Ohrn was invited to join the faculty at Florida as Associate Professor in 1966 and he chose to become a member of the Quantum Theory Project. He assumed the Associate Directorship of the Quantum Theory Project in 1967 and proved quickly to have the qualities that allowed him to deal effectively with the university administration at all levels as well as with issues within the rather diverse and extensive body of scientists and students of the Project. Fairness, compassion, and persistence are words that come to my mind when I characterize Yngve s leadership. [Pg.11]

The general assessment indicates that the pharmaceutical industry experiences problems with transparency of dmg registration in two out of the 10 countries— Cypms and Uganda. The main problems cited involve communication between the DRA and the industry regarding clarity of procedures and adequacy of official explanations for the rejection of an application. In Cypms, the Dmg Council also raised issues concerning the fairness of treatment of foreign versus domestic industry, and the arbitration of contradictory quality analysis results provided by different laboratories, both belonging to the Dmg Council. [Pg.87]

From the theoretical standpoint the above issues are addressed by quantum chemistry. On the basis of calculations of various cluster models [191] the properties of surfaces of solid body are being studied as well as issues dealing with interaction of gas with the surface of adsorbent. However, fairly good results have been obtained in this area only to calculate adsorption on metals. The necessity to account for more complex structure of the adsorption value as well as availability of various functional groups on the surface of adsorbent in case of adsorption on semiconductors geometrically complicates such calculations. [Pg.89]
