Faculty scholarship

In 1972, he joined the organic chemistry faculty at Iowa State University, where he is presently University Professor of Chemistry. His early work at Iowa State, on new applications of organomercurials in organic synthesis, earned him an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship and a DuPont Young Faculty Scholarship, and culminated in the publication of two books in the area Organomercury Compounds in Organic Synthesis and Solvomercuration/Demercuration Reactions in Organic Synthesis. [Pg.2594]

This work has been supported by the Turkish Academy of Sciences in the framework of the Young Scientist Award Program (KAE/TUBA-GEBIP/2001-2-8). H.K. acknowledges a scholarship for PhD students from Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK). The authors thank Ege University, Faculty of Pharmacy, project coordination (Project No. 04/ECZ/003) for their financial support. [Pg.1150]

What does the departmental reward structure say it rewards The first duty of chemistry faculty is to the young people whom they have chosen to teach, mentor, and guide in the joys and rigors of chemistry. Their second duty is to quality scholarship. In my worldview, if you want to do chemical research and not teach, not mentor, not guide students in the joys and rigors of chemistry, you have no business being in a university. Go do research somewhere else. Students are not cannon fodder. [Pg.82]

Lastly, change the reward structure. I have posited Title IX as a course of action37 because I think punitive measures have been earned and paid for in full, but changing the reward structure also has much to offer as a strategy. Really reward those faculty who are there for the right reasons for the students and for scholarship. The university that does so will inevitably alter its departmental environment to one that women will choose and one in which men and women will enjoy being citizens.38... [Pg.86]

One of the things we want of a faculty in a college are people who can think about the issues, whether it is education, how to teach better, whether it is the research community, the community of scholarship, or the various other functions that we provide. Unfortunately, when we recruit new faculty, we seldom look at the attributes that are going to be important for them to be complete faculty. [Pg.11]

We now have faculty with pure research grants who take on students in their laboratory working on their research initiatives. They copublish. They present the findings at conferences. That number is much smaller than the broad-based research training programs. We also have a number of scholarship programs that have research as a component. [Pg.45]

The programs vary in terms of the length of time that research experience lasts. For the most part, as long as a student has a scholarship, they must do research during the semester. It may not be as extensive as the research training program with specific guidelines, but those students work with a faculty member. [Pg.45]

Sometimes the scholarships provide supplies for the faculty and that is it. Other scholarships do not provide supplies. [Pg.45]

So, these students represent the cream of the crop. We have two selection weekends in which applicants come to campus with their families and participate in numerous activities, including interviews with students, faculty, and administrators in the program and the university. After the selection weekends are over, the interviews and placement tests are tabulated. Then we decide who will be offered a scholarship. The students have to have a B average in their preparatory classes. The SAT scores have to be at least 1200 with a 600 math score. [Pg.53]

Herein we have highlighted numerous contributions fi om faculty members who have enhanced their professional growth and development by using the creation of green chemistry educational materials as the vehicle. Green chemistry has served—and will continue to serve for the foreseeable future—as a fhiitful discipline for activities that enhance one s professional development, whether in teaching, scholarship, or community and/or institutional service. The... [Pg.30]

At most institutions, the tenure system provides new assistant professors a time span of approximately six years in which to demonstrate achievement in teaching, service, practice, and scholarship/research. - After this window of time, the faculty decides whether to grant tenure. The granting of tenure implies a guaranteed position within the university unless there is financial exigency or the faculty member is found guilty of misconduct. [Pg.2]

During the last 11 years, these pivotal reports have led most institutions to reevaluate how faculty members prioritize their time and the faculty reward system. Therefore, when contemplating an academic position, an individual should clearly understand the institution s mission and faculty reward system. The faculty candidate should also ascertain whether the assigned duties can be accomplished according to the projected allocation of time and effort and that they are consistent with the faculty reward system. Individuals who select either a college-based tenure- or nontenure-track position should clearly understand that success in academia requires achievement of not only excellence in completion of assigned duties, but also scholarship. ... [Pg.2]

Because a broader definition of scholarship is now accepted in higher education and it is realized that faculty members cannot effectively accomplish all four missions, two faculty models are most frequently used today. Individuals who assume the practitioner-educator model are enabled to accomplish either the scholarship of integration, application, and/or teaching because of their focus on teaching and practice. Individuals who fulfill the researcher-educator model are able to pursue the scholarship of discovery because they have minimal practice expectations. [Pg.3]

As noted above, a faculty member s roles and specific responsibilities are largely determined by the institution s mission and the assigned duties. Although there are differences in the percentage of time that is assigned to the areas of teaching, practice, scholarship/research, and service, all college-based faculty members are expected to demonstrate some level of scholarship. [Pg.3]

The authors gratefully acknowledge the financial assistance of the American Chemical Society, the Faculty of Science and Technology, and the Hawkesbury Foundation, University of Western Sydney, Hawkesbury. They also thank Mr. B. Corliss, Connoisseurs Choice, Sydney for the supply of authenticated melons and Mr. R. Finlayson, Department of Chemistry, University of New South Wales, Australia for ICP analysis. One of us (YW) thanks the Australian International Development Bureau for a scholarship. [Pg.239]

The first public performance of alchemical music (examples of Maier s fugues) appears to have occurred at the Royal Institution of Great Britain on November 22, 1935. Student members of the St. Andrews University Choir ( The Chymic Choir ) and the Music Department faculty conspired to give voice to the admirable scholarship of their colleague—Professor John Read."... [Pg.118]
