Ion extraction

However, the quantity of Pa produced in this manner is much less than the amount (more than 100 g) that has been isolated from the natural source. The methods for the recovery of protactinium include coprecipitation, solvent extraction, ion exchange, and volatility procedures. AH of these, however, are rendered difficult by the extreme tendency of protactinium(V) to form polymeric coUoidal particles composed of ionic species. These caimot be removed from aqueous media by solvent extraction losses may occur by adsorption to containers and protactinium may be adsorbed by any precipitate present. [Pg.213]

The wastes from uranium and plutonium processing of the reactor fuel usually contain the neptunium. Precipitation, solvent extraction, ion exchange, and volatihty procedures (see Diffusion separation methods) can be used to isolate and purify the neptunium. [Pg.213]

Various ion-optical tricks have to be used to compensate for the spread of energies of the extracted ions, which limit mass resolution unless corrected for. In the latest version of the atom probe (Cerezo et at. 1988), spatial as well as compositional information is gathered. The hole in the imaging screen is dispensed with and it is replaced by a position-sensitive screen that measures at each point on the screen the time of flight, and thus a compositional map with extremely high (virtually atomic) resolution is attained. Extremely sophisticated computer control is needed to obtain valid results. [Pg.233]

Because of the technical importance of solvent extraction, ion-exchange and precipitation processes for the actinides, a major part of their coordination chemistry has been concerned with aqueous solutions, particularly that involving uranium. It is, however, evident that the actinides as a whole have a much stronger tendency to form complexes than the lanthanides and, as a result of the wider range of available oxidation states, their coordination chemistry is more varied. [Pg.1273]

The caprolactam obtained must meet die specifications of permanganate number, volatile bases, hazen color, UV transmittance, solidification point, and turbidity in order to be used for repolymerization alone or in combination witii virgin CL.5 Reported CL purification methods include recrystallization, solvent extraction, and fractional distillation. One solvent extraction technique involves membrane solvent extraction. Ion exchange resins have been shown to be effective in the purification of aqueous caprolactam solutions. From the fundamental knowledge concerning the interfacial complexation mechanism obtained from the kinetic studies on chelate extraction, ion-association extraction, and synergistic extraction, one can design the interfacial catalysis. The main strategy is to raise the concentration of the reactant or intermediate at the interface. [Pg.374]

Various types of research are carried out on ITIESs nowadays. These studies are modeled on electrochemical techniques, theories, and systems. Studies of ion transfer across ITIESs are especially interesting and important because these are the only studies on ITIESs. Many complex ion transfers assisted by some chemical reactions have been studied, to say nothing of single ion transfers. In the world of nature, many types of ion transfer play important roles such as selective ion transfer through biological membranes. Therefore, there are quite a few studies that get ideas from those systems, while many interests from analytical applications motivate those too. Since the ion transfer at an ITIES is closely related with the fields of solvent extraction and ion-selective electrodes, these studies mainly deal with facilitated ion transfer by various kinds of ionophores. Since crown ethers as ionophores show interesting selectivity, a lot of derivatives are synthesized and their selectivities are evaluated in solvent extraction, ion-selective systems, etc. Of course electrochemical studies on ITIESs are also suitable for the systems of ion transfer facilitated by crown ethers and have thrown new light on the mechanisms of selectivity exhibited by crown ethers. [Pg.629]

Fourier transform mass spectrometry is made possible by the measurement of an AC current produced from the movement of ions within a magnetic field under ultra-high vacuum, commonly referred to as ion cyclotron motion.21 Ion motion, or the frequency of each ion, is recorded to the precision of one thousandth of a Hertz and may last for several seconds, depending on the vacuum conditions. Waveform motion recorded by the mass analyzer is subjected to a Fourier transform to extract ion frequencies that yield the corresponding mass to charge ratios. To a first approximation, motion of a single ion in a magnetic field can be defined by the equation... [Pg.280]

Several methods have been used to separate the lanthanides chemically solvent extraction, ion exchange chromatography, HPLC using Q-hydroxyisobutyric acid and, in limited cases, selective reduction of a particular metal cation.40-43 The use of di(2-ethylhexyl)orthophosphoric acid (HDEHP) for the separation of various rare-earth elements via solvent extraction has also been reported.44 16 This separation method is based on the strong tendency of Ln3+ ions to form complexes with various anions (i.e., Cl- or N03 ) and their wide range of affinities for com-plexation to dialkyl orthophosphoric acid. When the HDEHP is attached to a solid phase resin, the lanthanides can be selected with various concentrations of acid in order of size, with the smallest ion being the most highly retained. [Pg.889]

A baseline potential pulse followed each current pulse in order to strip extracted ions from the membrane phase and, therefore, regenerated the membrane, making it ready for the next measurement pulse. This made sure that the potentials are sampled at discrete times within a pulse that correspond to a 6m that is reproducible from pulse to pulse. This made it possible to yield a reproducible sensor on the basis of a chemically irreversible reaction. It was shown that the duration of the stripping period has to be at least ten times longer than the current pulse [53], Moreover the value of the baseline (stripping) potential must be equal to the equilibrium open-circuit potential of the membrane electrode, as demonstrated in [52], This open-circuit potential can be measured prior to the experiment with respect to the reference electrode. [Pg.114]

Detection of Li+ in artificial serum with a voltammetric Li-selective electrode in a flowthrough system was demonstrated [64], Lithium salts such as lithium carbonate have been extensively used for treatment of manic depressive and hyperthyroidism disorders. The therapeutic range of Li concentration is generally accepted to be 0.5-1.5mM in blood serum. The authors used normal pulse voltammetry in which a stripping potential was applied between pulses in order to renew the membrane surface and expel all of the extracted ions from the membrane, similar to galvanostatically controlled potentiometric sensors described above. Unfortunately, the insufficient selectivity... [Pg.119]

Inorganic species in soil are generally extracted with either water or an acid solution typically containing hydrochloric acid. Various other components that aid either in the solubilization, extraction, or stabilization of extracted inorganics, such as chelates, are also often added during the extraction process. Basic extractions are not as commonly used as are acid extractions with a few notable exceptions. The use of ion exchange resins to extract ions from soil is well established. [Pg.244]
